Lima - At least 17 people died and more than 30 were injured on Tuesday when a dump truck plunged 100m down a ravine in a mountainous region of Peru.

The victims included students, teachers and parents on an excursion to commemorate the anniversary of the province, Huanuco governor Ruben Alva said.

"In rural areas, people travel in many different ways, but nowhere in the world is it normal to transport humans in the back of a dump truck," Alva told local radio station RPP.

Most of the injured victims were under 15 years old, authorities said.

The driver survived the crash and was detained for questioning by local police.
