Tsunami warning for Hawaii

Washington - An earthquake off the west coast of Canada has triggered a tsunami that is headed toward the US state of Hawaii, The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre announced early on Sunday.

"A tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along the coastline of all islands in the state of Hawaii," the centre warned.

The centre said "urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property."

The expected arrival time of the tsunami is 10:28 pm local time Saturday (08:28 GMT on Sunday).

The announcement came after a major 7.7 magnitude earthquake shook the Queen Charlotte Islands off the west coast of Canada late on Saturday.

The epicentre of the tremor, which occurred at 20:04 (03:04 GMT Sunday) was located 139km south of the town of Masset, the US Geological Survey said.

Numerous aftershocks, some as large as magnitude 4.6, followed the initial quake, Canadian officials reported.

News 24 get your facts right. there was just a warning that a Tsunami COULD be imminent. There was no Tsunami created.

Hope its only a warning and nothing actually happens

Shaun they can pick up a tsunami before one is created...unlike south Africa these people are warned before something happens and they prevent it IF it happens.

This hype about Tsunami is not new. In the next few hours it will be downgraded to tropical storm or something of that sort.
