Istanbul - Police in Turkey have arrested 21 suspect members of the extremist Islamic State group, including three foreign nationals accused of planning to travel to Syria, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Friday.

Co-ordinated raids across the country, including in Istanbul and on Turkey's southern border, led police to uncover weapons and potential recruiters.

The raids are the latest in a serious of arrests of alleged Islamic State members in Turkey, where the group has reportedly run networks of operations for more than a year.

The group has taken over large portions of neighbouring Syria and Iraq.

Despite losing territory to Kurdish fighters in recent months, Islamic State still holds some areas along the border with Turkey and foreign fighters reportedly cross the frontier to join the extremist group.

Analysts have warned the group poses a threat to Turkey, particularly should Ankara develop a more hostile approach to the extremist organisation, and have not ruled out the potential for attacks on tourists.

The major Islamic holiday of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan, will be observed next week.
