Istanbul - A Turkish man was given a life sentence for electrocuting his wife in her sleep because he was angry at the fact that she had given birth to a daughter instead of a son, the Anadolu news agency reported on Thursday.

The murder took place a year ago, a day after the 33-year-old wife gave birth to their second daughter, judges were told.

The 29-year-old man planned the killing in advance, purchasing special gloves and electrical equipment, according to evidence presented to the court in the south-eastern city Diyarbakir.

In the first 11 months of 2014, men killed 253 women in gender-based attacks in Turkey, according to the independent news portal Bianet, which compiles data from several sources.

This was up from 214 such killings for the whole of 2013.

Rights groups have expressed concern that the authorities are not doing enough to protect vulnerable women.
