Sydney - Australia was bracing for two cyclones expected to make landfall in the Northern Territory and Queensland by Friday, with heavy rain and strong winds already lashing parts of both states.

Tropical Cyclone Lam intensified to category 3 overnight, bringing wind speeds of up to 140km/h to parts of the Northern Territory, where it was expected to make landfall late Thursday, the national Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said.

Tropical Cyclone Marcia was forecast to intensify and reach the coast of the north-eastern state of Queensland as a category 3 weather system early Friday, the bureau said.

Both states were warned they would face high tides, heavy rains and flash floods as well as strong winds.
