Jakarta - Two soldiers were found dead on Tuesday with gunshot wounds in Indonesia's once-rebellious province of Aceh, local media reported.

The plainclothes soldiers were abducted on Monday while investigating the presence of a civilian armed group in North Aceh, the news website said, citing the local military.

"We can't speculate [on the motive]," local military spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Machfudz, who goes by one name, was quoted as saying. "We leave it to the police to investigate."

Aceh, a devoutly Muslim province, was the scene of a separatist conflict that left an estimated 15 000 dead until a peace deal was signed between the Free Aceh Movement and the government in 2005.
