UK Catholics urged to fight gay marriage

2012-12-31 18:14

London - The leader of Roman Catholics in England and Wales has urged followers to write to their representatives in Parliament to oppose the government's plans to allow gay marriage.

In a letter read to congregations over the weekend, Archbishop Vincent Nichols called for Catholics to express their views "clearly, calmly and forcefully".

Nichols said he is concerned about how a change in the law would affect what children are taught about marriage.

He said he wants members of Parliament to "defend, not change, the bond of man and woman in marriage as the essential element of the vision of the family".

Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative-led government plans to introduce legislation in January to allow gay marriages. Recent opinion polls suggest a large majority of the public supports the change.

Gay marriage has no place in ANY church

      FrancoisSnyman - 2012-12-31 18:45

Why would gay people need the church in the first place! They should tell the church to go to hell and get married and live lives outside the hypocrisy of the Catholic church. It is fine to screw little boys on the side but gay people can't marry????

      megalos.savvas - 2012-12-31 18:57

Who said its fine to screw boys you pr#ck . Yes it happens no one said its right

      SarcasticAgnostic - 2012-12-31 19:37

But the silence from the papacy is deafening...

      leon.olivier.92 - 2012-12-31 19:49

So Warren what about gay marriage in a gay church. Yes you heard right there are gay churches. Look it up.

      FrancoisSnyman - 2012-12-31 20:11

And why would all the gay priests mind marrying their own kind? Please tell me a man that chooses to lock himself up with a bunch of other men is "straight".

      george.frangs - 2013-02-06 07:32

Church has NO place in regular society

  • douglas.reid.921 - 2012-12-31 18:48

Isn't burning at the stake what catholics do best?

      Raymon - 2012-12-31 19:17

      Aaag get over it already!

      Raymon - 2012-12-31 19:18

Allow them to 'marry' in the eyes of the law, just not in a church.

      SarcasticAgnostic - 2012-12-31 19:42

Raymon, that seems to be the decent thing to do. Gays forcing a pastor to marry them in a church where it is frowned upon, is wrong. The problem is this: Those Catholics want to ban gays from marrying in the eyes of the law. In their minds, marriage only counts if it is sanctioned by the church.

  • AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-12-31 18:48

. At the same time they can ask their representatives in Parliament, to tell the priests to keep their dirty hands out of childrens underpants!!!

  • angus.stembull - 2012-12-31 19:02

"judge not, lest ye be judged catholic"

  • merry.martin.944 - 2012-12-31 19:10

It looks like the Catholic Church is hell bent on hastening its own demise. What on earth is wrong with these people - and as for the homophobic comments on this article....Words fail me (almost). Time for people to grow up, accept that we are all different, and learn to live and let live.

      FrancoisSnyman - 2012-12-31 19:15

MM the homophobic comments all come from men in the closet. Only a man in the closet feels threatened by gay people.

  • Colleen - 2012-12-31 19:18

When did churches and christian religion decide to simply ignore the [supposed] very basis of their doctrine: to love one another? How is it that ANY church can decide that the love two people have for each other, is wrong? Especially the catholic church which seriously does not have the best reputation when it comes to 'wrong' love.... It wasnt all that long ago that love across the colour bar was also considered 'wrong' by many religions of the world. Always the church, striving to control and enforce doctrine which is destructive.

      Colleen - 2012-12-31 22:24

      :) exactly.

  • angus.stembull - 2012-12-31 19:29

Don't be nasty now, gays should have the right to be miserable too. Trust me, "fabulous" will end once they realise the rigours of marriage. Hehe.

      leon.olivier.92 - 2012-12-31 19:39

LOL thank you for a good clean laugh Angus. Happy new year !

      dingiswayo.nyambose.1 - 2012-12-31 20:16

  • fdalana - 2012-12-31 19:40

gay people must just start their own church to avoid a conflict of interest.

      carryn.whittaker - 2012-12-31 20:05

Child molesters must make their own........oh bollox they already have one!

  • ian.robertreid - 2012-12-31 19:41

  • Ntutu Dlova - 2012-12-31 19:47

It amazes me when people think they have a right to judge. stop with the holier than thou attitudes.

  • roi.boss1 - 2012-12-31 20:54

Give this man a bells double. It is so amazing how we are being held hostage by some deranged people that like queer choices. The moment you choose the same sex to satisfy your sick sexual choices you are giving up your right to be normal. These people have no right to bring up children and exposing them to their vices. Our problem is that we swinging to liberal values a lot. Gays are promiscuous and engage in high risk sexual activities. Thank you sir for standing up

      Francois Snyman - 2012-12-31 21:21

They call our continent Dark Africa for a reason. You are one of the reasons. Get yourself a bit of education before you post a ridiculous statement like this: "being held hostage by some deranged people that like queer choices. The moment you choose the same sex to satisfy your sick sexual choices you are giving up your right to be normal" You clearly know nothing about psychology beyond the restricted confines of your prejudice. As long as bigots like you breath this continent has no hope advancing into a prosperous future allowing every person basic human rights. Thankfully the likes of you weren't allowed near our constitution. Stop worrying about the gays and start worrying about the 2 Million orphans left without parents due to the promiscuous sexual behavior of the majority of this country.

      angus.stembull - 2012-12-31 21:23

      Outstanding post Francois

      polya314 - 2012-12-31 21:29

There's so much more to care about... Why are you so preoccupied what people do with one another? Why don't rather bother yourself with education, healthcare, corruption, unemployment, and the environment? Really now; any men that have an intense hatred of gays are clearly too interested in what other men do with their penises (not to mention they need to accept that some women don't want them.)

      Colleen - 2012-12-31 21:56

I can think of a good many straight couples who should not be allowed to have or bring up children!!

      carryn.whittaker - 2012-12-31 22:38

The bill will pass. Wail and gnash your teeth but the world is moving forward. No longer are we tied to the churches self serving definitions of normal or acceptable. You have no right to impose your ideals on the rest of us. Just as we have never presumed the right to impose ours on you. The only thing holding you hostage is ignorance.

      sidney.meyer.161 - 2013-01-02 15:57

      You should try it.

  • abdul.cassiem.9 - 2012-12-31 21:04

Guys lets worry about south Africa we have more important things to worry about. Let the gays an lesbians be thyare the most gentle an understanding people, but don't mess with them they'll knock the crap out of you.

  • angus.stembull - 2012-12-31 21:16

The law will be passed., thank FSM for that. , And I really do not think gays out there much care for a church sanctioned wedding, it's about the church trying to impede or prevent the law from being ratified. I.e legally recognised civil unions. Isn't that the gist of the article?

  • judge.dread.1428 - 2012-12-31 21:26

l petition kill the gays bill around the world.Gays are now a threat to society

Consenting adults. The concept mean much? These chaps serve at the whim of the pope do they not? Lemme see. The pope....white cape- check; gold and silver button downs and sequins- check; garish, outlandish headgear- check; 24hr male service- check; disco stick - check. Hey Ratzenberger, you sure you on the correct side of this debate?

      Francois Snyman - 2013-01-01 09:33
