UN General Assembly condemns Syria

Ne2w York - The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution backing an Arab League plan that calls for Syria's president to step down and strongly condemns human rights violations by his regime.

The vote in the 193-member world body was 137-12 with 17 abstentions.

Russia and China, who vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council, voted against the resolution.

There are no vetoes in the General Assembly and while their resolutions are not legally binding, they do reflect world opinion on major issues.

Supporters were hoping for a high "yes" vote to deliver a strong message to President Bashar Assad to immediately end all human rights violations and attacks on civilians and hand power to his vice-president.

Good. Well done. It shows the regimes who are standing against the positive evolution of human consciousness in stark contrast. Hopefully it's getting windy and cold for them out there in the perimeter. Their countrymen and women are bound to rise up and oust them in this Infirmation Age.

United Nations Smations, who cares, the UN has become a Pit Bull with no teeth. They flip flop on everything and shiver when waiting for Russia and China's stance, to see if they will veto resolutions.

The UN was born out of the deaths of tens of millions of people in the first and second world wars. It performs a valuable function as a forum for communication and connection. Without it the world would I think have more conflicts. It was very effective with Libya, don't you think?

if the UN wanted to act the US and Britain would be there by now guns blazing

The UN is kept hostage by China & Iran otherwise they would act – thus the blood spilled in Syria is therefore indirectly on Chinese and Russian hands as well… not to mention Iran whose revolutionary guards are literally doing the killings with Assad’s forces

Even though its just words on paper – it’s a step in the right direction. Russia & China need to know that the world (even the Arab world) is united against Syria. Thousands of Syrians have lost their lives in just a few months; while Russia, China & Iran are united in supporting these mass killings. Furthermore it must be stressed that Russian & Iranian military aid & revolutionary guards respectively are fighting in Syria on Assad’s behalf.
