UN chief 'gravely alarmed' at Syria killings

New Delhi - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says he is "gravely alarmed" at the continuing killings in Syria despite the government's repeated commitments to end the violence.

The UN chief told a news conference on Friday that UN military observers in Syria are reporting heavy weapons in populated areas, despite Syria's announcement that they had been withdrawn.

He said "the continued repression of the civilian population is totally unacceptable" and "must stop immediately".

Ban said the 13-month conflict has reached "an unacceptable, intolerable stage" and his priority, along with UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, is to accelerate deployment of the 300 UN observers authorized by the Security Council.

He expressed hope that their deployment "will change the dynamics on the ground".

My dear Ban, You should change your name to General Tin Tin Stupid-moon. Did you really believe that the Syrian government will stop killing it's citizens?

The assad family has no intention whatsoever, to give up , what "belongs" to them; a country called Syria. This assad, still believes, that he can murder enough opposition members, that calm will return. It worked for daddy, so why not for him!! In the 3 weeks that this UN "peace" initiative has been active, a further 650 Syrians have been murdered ! Kofi Annan, does not want to give up as yet, because it will mean another personal blunder by him, but to be honest , nothing like; "I should have done more in Rwanda........................" !!!!!!!

George, Than you might as well say; "Why bother about Syria and crime in SA, as long as Chelsea wins !!!

Georg You are right. We had massacres in the sixties and seventies and throughout the last century, the south african army opened fire on protesters and killed hundreds. And opens fire again to force people to leave their land and killing hundreds. And shoot again on the blacks who make mistakes and swimming in the beaches (white) . and open fire if a black man sat on a bench dedicated to white people. this is the difference between the South African army and the Syrian army. The Syrians should be proud of their government because it did not kill them for a century like us.

You're kidding, right? Do you have any idea what the "Syrian government" has been doing the past 48 years? Far more killings, mailings, tortures and rapes than the Apartheid government, far more.
