UN warns against attack on Iran nukes

2011-11-10 22:44

New York - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday called for a diplomatic solution to the nuclear stand-off with Tehran in an apparent reaction to media speculation that Israel might attack Iran's atomic facilities.

"He [Ban] reiterates his call for Iran's compliance with all relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency," U. spokesperson Martin Nesirky told reporters.

"The secretary-general reiterates his belief that a negotiated rather than a military solution is the only way to resolve this issue," he said.

  • Donder - 2011-11-10 23:36

ay ban ki, whens the last time anybody took you seriously?

  • Adam - 2011-11-11 00:52

the UN is one of the most useless bodies ever created. bunch of old farts who sit in their fat chairs acting like they know whats going on with their smug opinions

      Barry - 2011-11-11 06:52

If the UN did not exist, I doubt very much if Israel would exist either. If the UN is such a useless body, why is Israel and USA so fixated with Palestine's participation in it? I think it would be better if Israel was not USA's lapdog. If this stopped, or there was some indication that it would stop, I tend to believe the build up of weapons nuclear or otherwise in the middle east could diminish quite rapidly.

      cameronrh1 - 2011-11-11 10:54

@Barry, Actually if the UN didnt excist i think Israel would have wiped out the PLO and Hamas by now and saved themselves a lot of trouble by getting bombed daily from Gaza. US actually is Israels lap dog, without Israel the US wont have any ties to the middle east or allies which can protect their interests there.

      Barry - 2011-11-11 11:09

@cameron. Well we have a difference of opinion on the UN and also the existence of Palestine. We have to remember the state of Israel was forced on the region, with those countries having very little say. Hopefully war is not the answer and some maturity in the Israeli government prevails, if it exists. I wonder if this is just another excuse for the USA to steal the oil reserves, like they did in Iraq.

      Mthuthuzeli - 2011-11-11 14:26

@Adam You lost and looked bad doing it. If that's tough to swallow, keep chewing and keep a glass of water nearby, but give the straw-grasping a rest.

  • Neil - 2011-11-11 04:08

Yes a negotiated settlement with Iran would be lovely . Anyone believe Iran's leader would give up nuclear weapons development ? I doubt it . Israel will have to act . Sad but true .

      Dirk - 2011-11-11 05:46

The UN is nothing but a talk shop for international thieves, criminals, 3rd world dictators. The ones who talk most, are invariably the ones who most seldom pay their dues. Israel cannot rely on this lot for their security. They have the munition( Bunker boys) to destroy Irans nuclear capability and should do so asap. They have already rehearsed the run, even though over the Med, but the distances exactly if it were Iran. And they made sure Iran knows about it. Fact is" if you dont listen, you must feel"

      Will - 2011-11-11 09:22

What if Iran isn't the liar? 7 years and a million lives later, they still haven't found Saddam's WMDs. Just saying.

      Dirk - 2011-11-11 17:26

There were WMDs in Iran, but were removed to Syria just prior to the invasion by the USA. This is a known fact in the international intelligence community, even the opponents of the US, but they wont say a word. The locations were also known.

  • Boaz - 2011-11-11 06:19 The United Nations has made the democratic State of Israel the target of incessant condemnation while neglecting its mandate in challenging the oppressive regimes around the world. whatch the Vid...

      Adre - 2011-11-11 06:33

Go Israel go! Attack them and let no one stand! Ps 83 is about to become a reality! We pray for you Israel and the believers in the God of Israel, YHVH Elohim, is 100% behind you! You will win back all your land from the barbarians, now murdering thousands of innocent animals for Abraham, but actually for Ishmael!

      Dirk - 2011-11-11 08:20

Where are the robed followers of Mohammed this morning? On that point, I need to point out that I love Muslims, but have a distinct dislike in their religion. Jesus/God died on that old rugged cross for all, but He only becomes Lord for those who invite Him into their lives. Unlike satan, He does not impose Himself on us. He will only respond to our very honest invitation. But dont try and fool Him.Believe me, I tried for more than 30 years, and yes, He is far greater than our little human minds can comprehend.

      Oneant - 2011-11-11 08:52

@Dirk : i prefer a small daily doobie and a book on quantum entanglement personally. at least i dont have to personify the unknown universe rather attempting to quantify it.

      Dirk - 2011-11-11 09:00

And when you woke up, your coffee was cold. But in this case, with far greater consequences.

      Paul - 2011-11-11 09:06

@Dirk your lack of respect of other religions is a reflection of your christian faith. Christians have more blood on their hands than any other religion through recorded history. If you feel the need to 'testify' go and do that within the privacy of your weekly 'bible study', we don't need the details of your 'crutches' in life.

      Barry - 2011-11-11 11:26

@Dirk. As a person who is not religious at all and respect the beliefs of others, I see your "holier than thou position" dragging your religion into the gutter. Your God is not encouraging your bigotry surely ? I would think that this is a personal flaw in yourself.

      Dirk - 2011-11-11 13:58

You people are clearly confusing religion with Christianity. Jesus hated religion and He was crusified by religious people.(Pharisees) The crusades took place under a false cross of the catholics. The pope blessed and pardoned the crusaders for their murders, yet to take place. That was a false religion. In northern Ireland, you have atheist Catholics fighting atheist protestants. No, absolutely, no- I hate religion.Today still, every church still has their Pharisees- some just a lot more than others

      Barry - 2011-11-11 17:54

@Dirk. Oh I see. Christianity is not a religion. Now I have heard everything.

      Dirk - 2011-11-11 19:27

Absolutely not. Religion is the following of a set of rules. There are many churches with the appearance of Christianity, with hype and rituals but dead as a dodo. Christianity is clearly described in the Bible. There is a spiritual death at the cross- dying to this world and what it offers. Re-birth in the Spirit and most importantly, baptism in the Holy Spirit. This is the moment when God gives you one or more gifts. This is the point where any doubts disappears, I assure you.Christianity is NOT sitting in a building every Sunday morning out of habit because your parents did so. A born again person has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, hence the name Christian, and by their fruit you will know them

      Barry - 2011-11-11 19:43

      @Dirk. Bless you.

  • Chloe - 2011-11-11 06:35

Maybe Israel should drop 3 or 4 nukes on Iran and let them see the results ? Maybe then they will take it seriously !!

  • Van - 2011-11-11 06:49

You don't talk to the types like Iran. You take them out. That is the only way they will understand. Sooner, rather than later.

  • rhys.vetner - 2011-11-11 07:10

talk, talk, talk...thats all people seem to do, they did before WW2, and they are doing it again-this time there are nukes involved!

      Paul - 2011-11-11 09:14

There was no UN before WW2 moron. Get your facts right before you spew your colonial rhetoric. The only country that has used nukes in anger is the USA and their paranoia mentality is a reflection of their guilt. They will have their day.

      Merven - 2011-11-11 10:26

No Paul, you are the moron, no where did Rhys mentioned the UN. Before WW2 the only thing that America did was talk, the WW2 forced them to get active on military level. The same for the other countries, it was because of just talking that Hitler invaded three countries before the world started to act.

      Jerhone - 2011-11-11 19:17

@Paul the US did not bomb JAPAN in anger, you must get YOUR facts in order, the detonation of the two nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was to save American lives from a drawn out conflict in the Pacific arena, which had many islands which the Japs had fortified and were dug in, to have flushed them out would have taken thousands more American lives, remember the Japaneese had that attitude of rather dying than surrendering, the only way to get them to surrender was to bomb their home villages

  • rhys.vetner - 2011-11-11 07:21

Lol...have the planes in the air, above iran, with cameras- Have a live stream to Aljezera. Then drop a few nukes on iran and tell the world "Anyone who threatens the innocent Israelis will meet the same fate". Ploblem solved. Then the next nation that thought about trying anything similar will think twice!- All this talk reminds me of the UK PM just before world war 2- "I have a letter signed by Hitler, which garuntees peace..."

      Merven - 2011-11-11 10:29

It is not that simple Rhys, chances are very good that China and Russia will choose against Israel and America. Also it is not so simple to nuke a country, you don't know where the radiation will go to, Israel is not as far from Iran as you might think.

  • Donder - 2011-11-11 07:29

why is everybody so in favour of war? people die, usually innocent people, how can anybody encourage it? "war is sweet to those who have never experienced it" - unknown

      Barry - 2011-11-11 07:57

I agree 100%. I find it strange many people support war and probably have never had a gun pointed at them in their lives, especially when this Nuke issue in Iran could well be another USA WMD lie like in Iraq.

      Kobus - 2011-11-11 08:15

Israel is not to blame here. But you cannot expect them to sit idly whilst Iran is planning to destroy them. Israel has every right to attack Irans nuclear facilities.

      Donder - 2011-11-11 08:51

"those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" does iraq ring a bell? i will not be tricked twice

      Leon - 2011-11-11 09:02

you are 100% right it is easy to sit on the side and shout war Been in Iraq and at this moment in Afghanistan and war is ugly and at the end of the day there is no winners and that you can see on the faces of children But grown ups like Iran don't care its allways for or in name of.... and Israel can't just sit back Well lets hope there will be peace one day

      Paul - 2011-11-11 09:20

      @Donderwolk agree with you.

      Barry - 2011-11-11 09:25

@Kobus..Where is the proof Iran has nuclear weapons ? A this moment it is clear there is only one country planning attacks, Israel. Very suspicious.

      Merven - 2011-11-11 10:34

@Barry, Iran on various occasions said that they will level Israel to the earth. Iran has been threatening Israel for decades now, it is only the presence of America that prevented it. They are the ones looking for war.

      Mthuthuzeli - 2011-11-11 14:18

Except he only expressed the desire for Zionism to be wiped off the page of history, like fascism, communism etc. Which is hardly the same thing. The usual dupes are lining up to help demonise the Iranian state to provide political cover for the warmongering factions. If Iranians *were* all annihalated (per Mrs. Clinton), along with the Iraqis and Afghans and all the pesky Muslims, Western countries would still need a cosmic enemy. Probably India or China would be next.

      Mthuthuzeli - 2011-11-11 14:22

Its always those who never had a sniff of gunpowder who roar an shout the most about fighting wars. He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would suffice. Albert Einstein

      Barry - 2011-11-11 19:16

@Merven. My question was "Where is the proof of nuclear weapons. You comment means there is no proof.

  • Malcolm - 2011-11-11 08:50

The UN are useless. I think they are merely an organisation that employs useless people from 1st world countries to keep their rate of unemployment down. They do absolutely F.A except get drunk everynight in fancy restaurants & hotels. I know this, because I have lived in war torn countries where the U.N have been testing the local beer and local women. One thing is for sure, USA is sure to be behind any trouble in Iran. If they do try to do something stupid there, it will have very serious consequences. Iran is run by civilized people with brains.

      Barry - 2011-11-11 20:39

Lets hope the USA learn the error of their ways here

  • Dave - 2011-11-11 09:03

it will happen if Israel feels threatened! Talking and sanctions and talking and thinking often does not get results! action does, not all the time the right results but results non the less! How would South Africa feel if Bob had nukes???

      Dirk - 2011-11-11 17:35

Herd instincts? Unlike the Che Guevarra wannabee, who consults his comic books to see what he would have said. And that is rubbish

  • Dayaan - 2011-11-11 09:27

If the UN was so useless or irrelevant why is the US and Israel hellbent from keeping Palestine out of the UN? Why is the US trying its utmost from not reforming the security council and giving representation to other continents or countries on the council with veto powers? Israel sees everyone and not just nations as a threat to itself, you just have to point out some of their mistakes that they are making and you are labeled Anti-Semitic and a threat to national security. It is easy to put labels on people or organizations. The only nuclear power and threat to the mid-east is Israel since it has adopted the Masada option as far as its use of wmd is concerned. The US will have a greater morality if it destroys Israeli nuclear weapons and then go and prevent any other nation in the mid-east from developing or possessing nuclear weapons, but the US along with Israel has no morals as far as that is concerned. Israel refuses to sign the NPT and the US is not abiding by the very terms of the NPT that it is a signatory to. Both countries are hypocritical when it comes to nuclear weapons and should be looking at itself first before making demands on other countries in the mid-east. If Israel is not curbed by the US with its nuclear weapons then we are looking at another nuclear arms race as we had not to long ago between India and Pakistan. Mutually Assured Destruction MAD here we come again.

      Dayaan - 2011-11-11 14:50

A lot of people giving thumbs down with no logical response just proves to show that i am right

      Mthuthuzeli - 2011-11-11 15:20

Zionists respond to the Palestine/Iran issue with a kind of herd instinct. They see which direction the animals on either side of them are rushing, and don’t bother to notice the real world through which the pack is moving . Yet they pretend to comment on the real world. So you are dealing with morons and sheeple who aren't able to construct a sentence without the assistance of their sheperd. They are totally reliant upon their propagandists who just repeat ad nausium that Iran is seeking the destruction of that monstrosity called Israhell.

  • Frans - 2011-11-11 12:58

The USA is busy pulling out of Afganisatan. Their failing economy relies on military related industry, they thus need another war to keep the economy going. Sad eh...

      Mthuthuzeli - 2011-11-11 14:14

The US needs to be waging war continuously. Its war machine demands it, the war profiteers impose it; it is the only major industry it has not farmed out. The United $tates of Perpetual War Profiteering has devolved into a terrible, evil beast. The whole world must collectively rise up against this monstrous beast... as it did against Nazi Germany and the Japanese Imperial empire.

  • dawiej - 2011-11-11 14:10

Drop a nuke right on the factory. Then say oops they made a mistake and thier own bomb exploded,,,,

      Barry - 2011-11-11 20:16

@dawiej I dont think it is possible to get close to any Nuke Factories in the USA. In any case why are you wanting to escalate this to be global ? I am sure no one wants that. From what I understand people who target USA for attack are quite good at advising the world if they were responsible or not. They would never do what you are suggesting.

      Dan - 2011-11-12 00:05

yep , i agree , then their country will be radioactive for years .

  • Ian Lyle - 2011-11-12 21:04

Why was Israel allowed nuclear capability and the rest of the middle east may not develop? Once China becomes the top dog, these countries full of self protection hiding behind the US flag will have new issues to face. The US/israel continues to try and squash Palestinian/Iranian etc development, however as history has shown time and time again, todays mighty giant will be tomorrows forgotten hero, with reference in histories books. The US will one day also be a Rome, and God help them when the ivory tower falls. That will be the day that Israel will need to look at itself and ask: DID WE DO THE RIGHT THING?

      Barry - 2011-11-12 21:10

@Ian. You are 100% correct. The Israeli government, the whore of the USA, don't realize what is coming. I really fear for the Israeli people. The problem is even though they, the Israeli people, know what they are doing is wrong, they comfortable with it. Scary.
