US blocks UN action on Israel, Gaza

2012-11-21 08:13

New York - The United States on Tuesday blocked a UN Security Council statement condemning the escalating conflict between Israel and the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, setting the scene for a possible showdown between Washington and Russia on the issue.

The United States opposed the statement - which had to be approved by consensus - because it "failed to address the root cause", missile attacks by Hamas - of the escalation in fighting between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza, said Erin Pelton, spokesperson for the US mission to the United Nations.

Israel said it was these Hamas rocket attacks that prompted its major offensive against the militants in Gaza on Wednesday.

"We made clear that we would measure any action by the Security Council based on whether it supported the ongoing diplomacy toward de-escalation of violence and a durable outcome that ends the rocket attacks on Israeli cities," Pelton said.

"By failing to call for the immediate and permanent halt to rocket launches from Gaza into Israel, this press statement failed to contribute constructively to those goals," she said. "As such, we could not agree to this statement."

Russia said on Monday that if the 15-member council could not agree on a statement then it would put a resolution - a stronger move by the council than a statement - to a vote later on Tuesday to call for an end to the violence and show support for regional and international efforts to broker peace.

General deadlock

Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said later on Tuesday his resolution had been put on hold amid negotiations on a truce between Israel and Hamas militants, but if a ceasefire was not reached he might still put it to a vote.

"I think we should have said something [on the conflict] a long time ago," Churkin said. "We will assess the situation [on Wednesday morning]." The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to discuss the conflict on Wednesday afternoon.

A resolution is passed when it receives nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the five permanent council members - Russia, China, Britain, the United States and France.

The Security Council is generally deadlocked on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which UN diplomats say is due to US determination to protect its close ally Israel. The council held an emergency meeting last Wednesday to discuss the Israeli strikes on Gaza but took no action.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton headed to the region on Tuesday to try to calm the conflict. Egypt was trying to broker a truce between Israel and Hamas. Israeli air strikes and Palestinian rocket fire continued on Tuesday for a seventh day.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-11-21 10:25

Vox, that was then. Now it is different. Hamas is the new Nazi, except the Jews will not meekly lay down and die as they have done for the last two thousand years. Israel is the new reality and it will live forever.

      ModernMetaphysicist - 2012-11-21 10:35

      many thousand years, with conflict

      goyougoodthing - 2012-11-21 10:53

No Larry, it is not the Muslims who are the new Nazis, it's the other lot.

      saintbruce.bruce - 2012-11-21 12:26

At Vox Populi - wrong pal - Hitler was shown as a Roman Catholic but he was actually a practicing member of Madame Blavatsky's Theosophy movement [ Aryanism] - neither of which are Christian anyway. In short, it has been well documented that agression out of Gaza has been aimed at Israel on an ongoing basis. The core issue is simple: Islam and Judaism are spiritual enemies and have been since the time of Abraham and Issac. The solution to this age old conflict is spiritual so any secular efforts to resolve this conflict can never achieve peace. Yes the loss of life is tragic but the root cause will not change as it is bound by spiritual laws that man cannot change. Only the Creator can put an end to this enmity between Arabs and Jews. That event is still a ways off. So Hamas will send rockets and Israel will retaliate on and on and on. The only time a truce is struck by Hamas is when they run out of munitions and need to re-stock. Then it starts again. Watch the news and see the pattern.

      moses.mabhida.52 - 2012-11-21 12:41

The Muslims were part of the exis of evil, and war partners to hitlers crimes... The Muslims are still nazis. Muslims kill Christains in Egypt, Syria, Libia, nigeria, an Iran. Muslims kill Hindus in India and Pakistan, Muslims kill Buddhists in Thailand, Muslims have killed many in New York, Moscow, Madrid, London, and Nairobi. Muslims are not peaceful like they would want you to believe.

      justin.reeves.37604 - 2012-11-21 13:01

  • rafick.valli - 2012-11-21 10:42

Nothing new here! US has always sided with and assisted Israel in their oppression of Palestinians. “Since the October War in 1973, Washington has provided Israel with a level of support dwarfing the amounts provided to any other state. It has been the largest annual recipient of direct US economic and military assistance since 1976 and the largest total recipient since World War ll. Total direct US aid to Israel amounts to well over $140 billion in 2003 dollars. Israel receives about $3 billion in direct foreign assistance each year, which is roughly one-fifth of America's entire foreign aid budget. In per capita terms, the US gives each Israeli a direct subsidy worth about $500 per year. This largesse is especially striking when one realizes that Israel is now a wealthy industrial state with a per capita income roughly equal to South Korea or Spain.” Over the last 20 years, the US has been slowly phasing out economic aid to Israel &gradually replacing it with increased military aid. Beginning 2007, the US has increased military aid by $150 million each year. Beginning 2012, we will be sending Israel $3.1 billion a year (or an average of $8.5 million a day) &will continue to provide military aid at that level through 2018. US tax dollars are subsidizing one of the most powerful foreign militaries. According to the CRS report, “current US military aid] grants to Israel represent 18.2% of the overall Israeli defense budget.”

      clivelang1 - 2012-11-21 11:09

And what the problem is? the US supports Israel, just as Iran supports who they want....

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-21 21:13

Nothing new here for sure. Mohammed is still laboring under his self- imposed blindness laced with pseudo-victim hood that does nothing for him or the Palestinians. He is being left behind by the new generation who have seen through the lies he feels so comfortable and safe with.

Two groups of people resented and opposed the creation of an Israeli homeland for the Jewish people after the horrors of World War II, notwithstanding that the amount of land was a tiny, minuscule slither relative to their vast lands, and Jewish people had inhabited that land for millennia. Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what you wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people, one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.
