US defends Israeli attacks on Gaza at UN

2012-11-15 10:02

New York - Arab nations demanded the UN Security Council condemn Israel's deadly attacks on Gaza at an emergency meeting late on Wednesday, but the United States strongly defended Israel's military strikes.

Egypt and other Arab states called for the emergency meeting after Israel staged more than 20 air strikes on the besieged Palestinian territory, killing Hamas military commander Ahmed Jaabari.

The 15-nation council did not condemn either side after the 90 minute meeting. Hardeep Singh Puri, India's UN envoy and Security Council president, said: "All the statements that I heard resonated with one message - that the violence has to stop, there has to be de-escalation."

Arab nations wanted the council "to condemn that barbaric attack" by Israel and "send a strong message to call for a cessation of hostilities", said Sudan's UN envoy Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman, chairperson of the Arab bloc at the UN.

The United States strongly defended the actions of its key Middle East ally however.

Highlighting Israel's claim that at least 768 rockets have been fired from Gaza this year, US ambassador Susan Rice told the council: "Israel, like any nation, has the right to defend itself against such vicious attacks.

Peace efforts harmed

"There is no justification for the violence that Hamas and other terrorist organisations are employing against the people of Israel. We call on those responsible to stop these cowardly acts immediately."

Rice, a frontrunner to become the next US secretary of state, said the rocket attacks were harming efforts to end the Middle East conflict and create a Palestinian state.

"Hamas claims to have the best interests of the Palestinian people at heart, yet it continues to engage in violence that does nothing but set back the Palestinian cause.

"Attacking Israel on a near daily basis does nothing to help Palestinians in Gaza nor to move the Palestinian people any closer to achieving self determination and independence," Rice said.

Britain's UN envoy Mark Lyall Grant also condemned rocket attacks into Israel but called on Israel "to act in a way that de-escalates tensions".

Only the Palestinian and Israeli ambassadors were allowed to address the meeting on top of the council envoys.

Death, destruction, trauma

Palestinian envoy Riyad Mansour told the council that a child of 11 months, two other children and a pregnant 19-year-old woman were among those dead from the attacks.

Reports said on Thursday morning that 11 people had been killed in the strikes.

"Death, destruction, trauma and terror are being rained upon our people before the eyes of the world," Mansour said.

"The international community must act to bring an end to Israel's illegal policies and practices against the Palestinian people," he added.

Mansour said the attacks were linked to the Palestinian application for observer status at the United Nations, which is due to be voted on by the UN General Assembly on 29 November.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned that the military operation could be expanded and the country's UN ambassador Ron Prosor said: "The goal of Israel's operation is clearly defined - to remove a strategic threat to Israeli citizens."

Resolution proposed

He told the council that Israel will not play "Russian roulette with the lives of our citizens".

"Hamas has turned Gaza into a haven and a breeding ground for global terrorist organisations," Prosor declared.

The Palestinian envoy said that if the council could not halt Israel's attacks, the Palestinian Authority would come back and demand a formal condemnation of Israel.

He said this could include proposing a resolution, which the United States would almost certainly veto. The US administration uses its powers as a permanent member of the UN council to block any resolution condemning Israel.

How many times has this been said on this forum. Hamas must be the most stupid people on this planet. They KNOW Israel will retaliate. They KNOW they achieve nothing with their rockets. They KNOW they lose sympathy from the world. They KNOW they lose US, EU, and Arab dole-money for stupidity, yet they continue to fire rockets at Israeli civilians. they deserve what they get.

I agree - you put your head in the lions mouth and not expect to get bitten? They want this to happen so they can say the Israelis are callous murderers - Lets get back to the beginning - who was it that sent missiles into wherever first? Hamas into Israel! I have been watching this breaking news from the moment the first missile went into Israel... They are sowing what they reap - and please save your women and children first - dont hide behind them or use them as shields - stand up like men!! I am gatvol of this lopsided blame game!!

  • es.vl.9 - 2012-11-15 10:49

Whoever wrote this twisted piece of news needs to get fired. First of all, it says Israel shot 20 missiles and states this as a fact, then it states Israel's side of the story but uses the words "claim". Whoever wrote this was already biased against Israel. Classic AFP trash. News24, start writing your own news instead of getting fed rubbish by AFP.

Dear Aaron, Please enlighten us with your superior knowledge and geo-political insights. Your comment is based on some sources of information that the majority including the media do not have access to. Could you share these with us? I in particular would like to know when you had these insight during your tour with the IDF and the time you served with the Mossad. Your time in Israel to glean the information about the zionist racist apartheid entity, cited as the cancer of the world called Israel, must really have been some adventure. How we envy you. Just being able to HEAR and SEE these Jews plan and plot daily, to waste money bombing up planes, putting them in the air, using fuel and rockets, training pilots, air control structures and radar systems built etc.. Just to provoke rocket attacks from Gaza. Wow! When can we expect the book that exposes these conspiracies....

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8 Following a two-week lull in violence, Israeli soldiers invade Gaza. In the resulting exchange of gunfire with Palestinian fighters, a 12-year-old boy is killed by an Israeli bullet while he plays soccer. Shortly afterwards, Palestinian fighters blow up a tunnel along the Gaza-Israel frontier, injuring one Israeli soldier. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10 An anti-tank missile fired by Palestinian fighters wounds four Israeli soldiers driving in a jeep along the Israel-Gaza boundary. An Israeli artillery shell lands in a soccer field in Gaza killing two children, aged 16 and 17. Later, an Israeli tank fires a shell at a tent where mourners are gathered for a funeral, killing two more civilians, and wounding more than two dozen others. It's quite interesting that a Google search lists the number of Hamas rockets fired into Israel, but there's not a single search result displaying the number of missiles fired into Gaza!

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what you wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people, one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.

For weeks now Israeli civilians have been terrorized by hundreds of Hamas rockets. Today Israel retaliated in self defense by killing an out and out murderer & coward. A clinical strike aimed at limiting civilian deaths. In the entire time that these rockets have been raining down on innocent civilians, the international media and the UN have been deafeningly silent. They have reserved their outrage for Israel's measured response. A level of hypocrisy never seen before in world politics. Let's not forget that Hamas & Hezbollah are surrogates of Iran's political objectives and have ramped up the ante prior to Israeli elections. Israel evacuated every last inch of soil in Gaza yet the rockets keep coming. You may perceive this as a result of the so called siege of Gaza imposed by Israel. This is truly just a perception as there would be no siege if there did not exist at the heart of the Hamas charter & ideology the call for the total destruction of the state of Israel, the annihilation of Jews & Christians alike and to what end? Shariah law throughout the world. These are fundamentalist religious fanatics with a repulsive ideology. The world continues to fail the Palestinian people by buying into this ideology. Israel will prevail and as long as the international community continues to hope for Israel's destruction the status quo will remain the same. Enough is enough already. Unfortunately their is no space for compromise in a fundamental ideology.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-11-15 11:24

"These are fundamentalist religious fanatics with a repulsive ideology." In Israel you have a hard and cold nationalistic movement with an iron ideology which cares for nothing, respects no rules and no laws and has no scruples at all. It's called Zionism!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-11-15 11:57

What's so great about condemning? It's meaningless.

      lesvokli.pitsiladi - 2012-11-15 12:33

Fidel - Zionism??? like the Afrikaner Bond here in SA and other pointless nationalist movements??? Zionism is just another communist word to describe wealth and power they (communists) want. Here in SA, the word you use instead of Zionism is White monopoly capital.

@ Mohammed. It is gift of the gab not gap. The only gap I see is you. You do not need to be educated to know wrong from right. You do not need to be educated to have decent morals and standards. You do not need to be educated to defend yourself against anyone that means you harm.

Both the Israeli government and terrorist groups operating in the West Bank and Gaza Strip must be condemned and brought to justice for killing & hurting innocent people all for their own political gains to control populations and wealth.

It's all part of Israel's illegal occupation of Palestine, where kids throwing stones at tanks are gunned down, schools are destroyed, clinics ransacked, homes plundered, tank shells lobbed into marketplaces and missiles hurled into crowds. After being driven out of what's now Israel in 1948, the Palestinians are now enduring a second, more gradual expulsion in the West Bank -- ethnic cleansing slow enough as to escape undue world -- read American public -- attention. Despite the "road map" to peace, land continues to be confiscated to build Israeli settlements, which brings the occupation troops and roads for the exclusive use of settlers that dissects Palestinian land, making life barely liveable. Palestinians avoiding the numerous roadblocks on their own land to go about their daily lives invite a hail of bullets. While settlers fill their swimming pools, Palestinians go begging for water; the army destroys wells. Countless orchards nurtured over generations have been wiped out, marketplaces bulldozed, civilian infrastructure everywhere trashed, often for no apparent security reason.

      lesvokli.pitsiladi - 2012-11-15 14:06

Those "settlers" brought those swimming pools to a desert that converted into an oasis.

If this conflict was about territory and borders , it would have been resolved a long time ago . Its an existential conflict , where one wants to eliminate the existenece of the other. No-one (credibe) wants to end the existence of Palestinians or do not see a future in which a Palestinian state exists. Its the core of the problem , borders , land , right to return and all these other issues can be resolved but not a people and states exisitence. No-one questions Pakistan's right to exist or the 50 odd countires that have come into existence since Isreal .

Fidel please go to Gaza now and help your brothers. We will do a collection on this forum and contribute to your ticket (one way though). You can hide in a mosque and fire rockets into land of the Zionist settlers.
