US envoy to Israel: US ready to strike Iran

2012-05-17 16:03

Jerusalem - Washington's envoy to Israel says the US has plans in place to attack Tehran if necessary to prevent it from becoming an atomic military power.

In remarks before the Israel Bar Association, Dan Shapiro said the US hopes diplomacy and economic sanctions will pressure Iran to abandon its suspect nuclear programme.

He says the US prefers not to resort to military force "but that doesn't mean that option is not fully available. Not just available, but it's ready. The necessary planning has been done to ensure that it's ready."

The Associated Press obtained a recording of his remarks on Thursday. Shapiro spoke on Tuesday.

World powers are to meet with Iran for a new round of nuclear talks in Baghdad next week. Iran denies it is building bombs.

GOOD !!! NO more additional nuclear powers ! Unfair ?? So it be !!

      Shaun - 2012-05-18 05:12

Michael I sleep uneasy at night knowing that a rogue country is running around the World bombing and murdering innocent civilians for their need for oil. Then lying to people like you (who would believe anything on the mainstream media) telling them it is to stop the nuclear threat. lol. Remember Iraq sir? They are still looking for those "weapons of mass destruction" if you have not heard.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-18 06:07

Shaun you sleep uneasily at night because you're delusional about what is really going on. Your Higher Self is trying to say to you to inform yourself about who the Iranian regime is, distinct from the Iranian people. One of the faces of anxiety is misplaced trust. You're trusting people who are entirely untrustworthy. This is enough to spoil a healthy sleep pattern.

      Shaun - 2012-05-21 10:03

Fred you said "You're trusting people who are entirely untrustworthy". You should listen to your own advice buddy ;)

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-05-17 20:21

Muedes, You just don't get it !! Iran will not use a nuclear weapon themselves, they are pretty crazy, but not that crazy!!! But they would be more than willing to sell or give such a weapon to a terrorist organisation, as that is, with oil their biggest export product; TERORISM !!!!!

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-18 01:11

Muedes/Gollum, the same IAEA that was dissuading the US from invading Iraq is saying the Iranian regime, distinct from the Iranian people, is hiding two nuclear facilities.

      Michael - 2012-05-18 15:20

The problem is Henry that Iran and it's allies are determined to get their hands on nuclear weapons. The fanatical moslem faction's agenda is to wipe Israel off the map. For this reason alone Israel are to act swiftly on the matter and the US understands this.Religous nutcases unfortunately without rational thinkng are a very dangerous mob.

  • ACvanNiekerk - 2012-05-17 17:10

I think Iran already has a nuclear bomb. If I was in charge of their military project in developing the bomb I would let my enemies think I am still far away from achieving my goal. Seeing that they already have working nuclear reactors to develop a centrifuge that can create enough uranium-235 shouldn't be a problem. All the pressure everyone is placing on Iran might just make them trigger happy. Unfortunately the can of worms the Manhattan project released in the form of the nuclear bomb on the world cannot be selectively owned. Its like guns - first they were tightly controlled but eventually everyone had one. So will nations we'd prefer not to. Hopefully the threat of mutually assured destruction will suffice. Then again - what if a suicide bomber now runs the country?

      Jaba - 2012-05-18 09:04

That is the problem. The Ayatollahs are so religiously fanatic that they will become a world threat with Nuclear weapons. Even though Israel has never declared so, I am sure they have nuclear weapons - now if a country like Israel, that is attacked every Friday and Monday could be mature enough to never have used a nuclear weapon than I trust them to never use it - however the western world is not in a mood to find out in a few years time whether the Mullahs of Iran would or wouldn’t use a BOMB if they had it. They believe in virgins in paradise and that sort of BS… I can not treat them like educated western and peaceful people for they are backwards and violent to their own people.

He gassed thousands of Iraqi Kurds to death, including women and children. I don't agree with the invasion of Iraq, but at least I know who Saddam Hussein was and what he did.

      Shaun - 2012-05-21 10:07

  • Ted - 2012-05-17 17:16

Very transparent game planning for another oil war. First you tell everyone not to buy oil from the Iranians. Countries adjust and source the stuff elsewhere. When you finally attack, the world economy is not adversely affected. You then control both Iran and Iraq. Meanwhile you allow your sancho panza (Israel) to continue to continue to saber-rattle. Simple Yankee logic.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-18 06:18

Reading children's detective stories again and projecting them onto international affairs. Try educating yourself instead, specifically about how international oil markets work, how oil contracts are tendered, who has won the tenders, who has the biggest influence and derives the biggest benefits from oil prices.

The Iranian regime is not the Iranian people. There is a clear distinction here. The Iranian regime adjusts elections to hold onto power. It has hijacked the Iranian state from the Iranian people. It supports the stoning to death of women. This is beyond barbaric and almost unimaginable in 2012. It denies the Holocaust, which was the single biggest attempt at human genocide in the history of humankind. Six million people exterminated. Six million. It openly calls for the destruction of Israel, a sovereign state. It abuses the Palestinian people by inciting them to attack Israel almost daily. It does this to present a false external enemy to the Iranian population, so it can justify its existence. Much like the Apartheid regimen used "Die Rooi Gevaar". As long as Israel is the dangerous enemy, the Iranian regime, the real danger, is out of the spotlight. It funds the Jihadist movement, who's members have killed and maimed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians with their car bombs and suicide attacks. The freer world is entirely right to deny this truly oppressive regime nuclear weapons. Here's hoping the 67 million Iranian Muslims soon free themselves from this awful, awful regime and join the freer world in the 21st Century.

      Larry - 2012-05-17 20:33

The rabble of this world, exemplified by the majority commentators here, have such a simplified view of world issues. There are far greater complexities involved. Before it was the competing ideologies of Capitalism versus Communism which split the world and the hangover remains. Now it is the West and its liberal defense of religiosity versus the quasi-cult ideology of Islam. Islam is a facist ideology cloaked in religion, which makes it far more toxic and violent than anything this world has had to deal with since Hitler. The line is drawn in the sand of the Negev.

  • nowicki1 - 2012-05-17 20:29

America's own paranoia through fear of reprisals brought about by their continual aggression, intimidation, sabotage and military action towards countless of countries for decades AND it's continuation under this administration will see to that. The provocative foreign policy and controlling laws of the U.S. is less to do with a failing economy, civil unrest and National security and more to do with the U.S. losing their No.1 Superpower status. Consider that powerful nations are rejecting the dollar as the 'World Reserve Currency' and there is a serious concern that OPEC countries stop trading in the US Dollar to sell their oil. The very thought of it encourages major war in order to uphold the US economy. The dollar's ,'World Reserve Currency' status allows the U.S. to run up high deficits and have its debt denominated in the U.S. dollar. This in turn enables it to print unlimited dollars and inflate its way out of debt. America will protect this privilege with human life and already have displayed this. The growth of Japan, Russia, South Korea, amongst others and particularly China given it's size, created by the continual devaluation of the U.S. Dollar through mass printing could soon change all of that.

      Mark - 2012-05-18 13:59

Matt, you understand the truth. America will go down in history as a terrorist nation. And I hope all people who support them are ashamed. We need to mention that Israel is an Apartheid country, unless you believe a person of one religion has more rights than another.

      Fidel - 2012-05-18 15:01

  • marius.dumas - 2012-05-18 01:00

Does anybody really believe the US is not capable of putting together thousands of nukes in a few days? Just because they disarmed them as “bombs” technically speaking, does not mean the plants, machines, designs, expertise and parts have been abolished; it only means they took them apart. No sweat setting them up again. Its typical of the US to want to keep the striking power for them selves and point fingers to others who do the same. It was the US who placed the nuclear threat on the world of war to begin with. They were the only country who actually dropped two of them on cities. It was them who created most of the science behind it and them who is still a big threat. It was not to long ago when Bush warned Osama that if he attacks a US with weapons of mass destruction he will nuke them. Any major threat for the US will still result in the risk of nuclear attacks from the US.

  • marius.dumas - 2012-05-18 01:02

Yes and Bush is still looking for the weapans of mass distruction in Iraq after blowing Iraq, its men, women and children to peaces.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-05-18 20:07

More abdication of responsibility Patrick. The US is not making choices for the terrorists. They're making their own choices, like declaring war on the freer world, which, by the way, they did long before the invasion of Iraq.

  • Fidel - 2012-05-18 08:22

It's quite amusing that leaders of a so called "free country" before elections, make obeisance to Zionism, in order to garner support for their campaign coffers. This is what a corruption of democracy looks like and the American public are asleep from eating too much cheese cakes, burghers and watching Hollywood movies.

      Jaba - 2012-05-18 10:31

In their quest to rid themselves of everything ‘Zionist’ why does Iran not rid itself from Nuclear power (a Zionist invention) and also while at it forget about the Zionists equation of E=mc^2. FYI two sticks and a crayon is your best replacement to Intel, while two tin cans with a string between them is your best replacement to cell phones.

      Mark - 2012-05-18 14:02

A free country (aka Free individuals) is not possible with Democracy, only a republic. TO know the difference is to know what is required for true freedom. For those that will not read. Rule of the mass perception vs rule of law.
