Washington - US President Barack Obama ordered flags to be lowered to half staff on Friday to mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of his predecessor John F Kennedy.

"A half century ago, America mourned the loss of an extraordinary public servant," Obama said in a proclamation on Thursday.

"With broad vision and soaring but sober idealism, President John F Kennedy had called a generation to service and summoned a nation to greatness. Today, we honour his memory and celebrate his enduring imprint on American history."

Obama and former president Bill Clinton and their wives laid a wreath at Kennedy's grave on Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery.

Kennedy was struck down by an assassin's bullet in Dallas on 22 November 1963. The moment has been declared a turning point in the 20th century.

A ceremony will be held at Dallas' Dealey Plaza, where Kennedy was shot as he rode in an open car through the city, and other events are planned around the country.
