US freezes $200m in aid to Palestinians

2011-10-01 22:47

Washington - Key US lawmakers are blocking about $200m in Palestinian aid in response to the territories' UN statehood bid, congressional aides said on Saturday.

Members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee have frozen the funding "until the Palestinian statehood issue is sorted out", one of the aides told AFP.

The economic package is separate from security aid, which the US lawmakers say would be counterproductive to block. They fear that withholding those funds would weaken the ability of Palestinian security forces to quell anti-Israel violence.

A coalition of Israel-backing Democrats and conservative Republican lawmakers are angered by the Palestinian bid for United Nations membership. Both the United States and Israel insist that only direct negotiations can produce an accord leading to Palestinian statehood.

US lawmakers earlier warned against the Palestinian bid.

"There must be consequences for Palestinian and UN actions that undermine any hope for true and lasting peace," Republican representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said on September 23.

Representative Nita Lowey, the top Democrat on the House panel that oversees foreign aid, warned that the annual $500m in economic and security assistance to the Palestinian Authority (PA) was at risk.

Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and the number-two House Democrat, representative Steny Hoyer, have accused Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas of shunning direct peace talks in favour of "diplomatic warfare" against Israel.

"Congress will not sit idly by. The US will likely reconsider its assistance programme for the PA and other aspects of US-Palestinian relations should the Palestinians choose to move forward in requesting a vote on statehood," they said in a joint September 22 opinion article in the New York Daily News.

Israel has the largest fleet of F16's in the world after the USA because they give them basically ALL OF THEIR MILITARY HARDWARE! Israel's illegal (and internationally condemned by the UN) war on a non-militarised FOREIGN population is sick. I also used to be pro-Israel until I looked at the reality of the situation.

      Keane - 2011-10-02 09:45

@Notuagain I think he meant 'pair'. Not 'pear'. What a lag ...

      Arno Young - 2011-10-02 10:40

@TextOfReason. 'Israel's illegal (and internationally condemned by the UN) war on a non-militarised FOREIGN population is sick' Which war? Me thinks leveling unbased accusations are sick.

I suppose their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) pledging $30bn in military funding for Israel to support their universally-decried illegal expansionist policies will still remain.

Give that money to terrorism victims

      Fragile - 2011-10-02 00:32

About time!!!!! This so called humanterian aid which was used soley for the purchase of arms and ammunition. hamas has the EU and the UN still pouring in money for killing purposes only.

  • mecan - 2011-10-02 00:17

Great news, let's hope Congress will decide to withhold the whole 600 billion dollars. What have they ever done with the money that's been poured into that fake institution, known as the palestinian Authority? What do they have to show for it? A better life for the average Palestinian? Nope. Forget the wonderful mall, hotel, swimming pool and all that. They need a proper health scheme, an educational system that doesn't glorify bloodshed, hatred and martyrdom, roads - the whole infrastructure of a society. Let them cry to their Arab brethren who are neither interested nor care for the Palis.

USA has fed, clothed, housed and educated Palestinians most compared to other countries, even much more than oil rich arab countries. the baby nursing project should be taken over by arab countries. why USA in her 14 trillion debt still needs to babysit the unteachable nation which celebrated on street when NY's finest died in the 9/11! and gazans even condemned USA for killing Bin Labin. this Baby of PA will never grow up, and suck the milk dry of the "mother". let Iran, Saudi and turkey feed her. Let the countries that support UN bid feed PA!

... but they won't ban AID TO ZIMBABWE????

  • Ian - 2011-10-02 06:42

give me a break, that want the money to buy weapons and to line there pockets, its the only way a terrorist thinks, just like here

  • Willie kruger - 2011-10-02 09:26

As long as the Palestinians refuse Israel’s right to exist and allow terrorists to operate from their territory they can not expect statehood treatment. The 1972 Olympic murders committed by Palestinians like the 9/11 attack and other terror attacks rates the same as Hitler’s atrocities. Stop them.

  • Tony - 2011-10-02 12:31

The same reason Hamas etc. does not intend recognizing Israel, is the very reason the US and Israel do not want a statehood for the Palestinians. Firstly, Israel has no defined border according to the Israeli Declaration of Independence 14 May 1948,and they wish is to regain the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah that had once been. Why should the Palestinians leave, like how apathied said the Africans got the whole of Africa, leave us with the SOUTH. Resistance!!! Why don't they go to Europe, US or wherever and leave us alone Secondly, if Palestine is recognized as a state, Israel can be brought to the International Criminal Court for its crimes against humanity. What happened in 2007 with evidence of nuclear weapons, Attacks on the aids sent for the Palestinians ETC. Visit Palestine and see how the Palestinians live and a reminisce of Apartheid. Point being Hamas etc. do not recognize Israel and US and Israel etc. do not want a Palestine cause there is no sharing. The two state solution is a MYTH (hope wrong), Reconciliation amongst themselves is impossible. So carry on building and building... while SOME are sleeping. Oppression does not last for those with Hope. Point being WE DON'T NEED YOUR AID, and rather use the money for those protesting on Wall Street

  • j4truth - 2011-10-02 14:42

Good Now ship'em all off to Jordan - the homeland that was created for them! Let Israel get on with their lives and build homes for their returning peoples - including those kicked out of RACIST Muslim countries!!!!!!!

      Ricardo - 2011-10-02 15:35

Why did they leave in the 1st place? Who made it their homeland? Who was kicked out?

      Zionist - 2011-10-02 16:32

There was only a Palestine when the British were there (a land mix of Muslims Jews and Christians), before that it was owned by/controlled Ottomans, the Romans and before that the Jews (=/-5000 years). It was handed over to the UN (by the British) who divided the land. Arabs were not happy and went to war, furthermore Arab nations kicked out their Jewish populations +/-1.5 million people. Jews got kicked out of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Saudi, Lebanon, Tunisia, Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Yemen... the Pali's lost their return note when the Arab world told them to leave (so that they could attack the Jews without harming the Arabs on the land - but they lost that and every other war against Israel)... they can take up any one of the empty spots the "Jew" left for you anywhere in the countries above... problem is... they probably chose the EU Fact is the indigenous people of the land were Jews around 2000 years before Islam was created

  • Ricardo - 2011-10-02 17:29

2000 yrs ago? Like what Mugabe did, is doing to the British??? what did Palestine have to do with the British?? how was it divided? What are the borders of Israel??

      MosesMabhida - 2011-10-02 22:07

What don't u understand? - there was NO Palestine b4 the British were there, FACT... never was: no anthem, no coins or paper money, no capital, no ID, no passport etc etc. Palestine was created by the Arab league as a tool to abuse Israel. why do you think there are refugees in Syria & Lebanon for 60 odd years - they will not give them citizenship so they could use them as pawns in this holy war against this no Arab "cancer" in the hart of Arab/Muslim land - they cant stand Israel and will go as far as suicide to fight it. religion is so sad
