Norfolk - A US judge has ordered a Somali pirate to serve a dozen life sentences in prison for his role as a hostage negotiator in the hijacking of a German merchant vessel and a US yacht.

The four Americans aboard the yacht were shot to death by pirates. The crew on the other vessel was tortured to get a higher ransom.

Mohammad Saaili Shibin was convicted earlier this year of the 15 charges he faced, including piracy, kidnapping and hostage-taking. Shibin's attorney says he will appeal.

US District Judge Robert Doumar told Shibin on Monday that he was fortunate he didn't get the death penalty. Prosecutors will seek the death penalty against the three men charged with shooting the Americans.

Mohammad Saaili Shibin? I take it that he is a very peaceful Muslim?

Can the USA take over the whole anti-piracy effort? Only country with the means and the guts to clear these vermin from the planet. E.g. Why not deploy drones over Somali coast to sink this trash and let the sharks finish them off?
