US mega-church gets new name

Garden Grove - Southern California's landmark Crystal Cathedral has been given a new name as the evangelical church transforms into a Catholic church.

The iconic, glass-paned mega-church founded by Hour of Power televangelist Robert Schuller was sold to the The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange last year.

On Saturday, Bishop Tod Brown renamed it Christ Cathedral during a priest ordination and named Christopher H Smith to the top post at the new church.

The Garden Grove cathedral's name came after more than 4 100 submissions from Catholics all over the world.

Schuller retired in 2006 after seeing his ministry that began at a drive-in movie theatre evolve into a global televangelist empire.

But after a botched leadership transition to his son, donations began to plummet and in 2010, the Crystal Cathedral sought bankruptcy protection.

The diocese bought the 2 900-seat cathedral and its grounds for $57.7m. It will have to renovate the cathedral for Catholic worship before services can begin.

Meanwhile, the Crystal Cathedral congregation, which will be moving about 1.6km away to St Callistus Catholic Church in June 2013, will have to renovate that church for the Hour of Power to be filmed there.

Smith told the Los Angeles Times that at a recent meeting with Schuller, the preacher said he always had Jesus Christ in mind when conceptualising the cathedral.

"And now, as it turns out, the cathedral is going to be named Christ Cathedral," he said.

Yeah. Right. The hour of power was obviously ignored by the god because the church went bankrupt. Money, money, money! When will people realise that religion is all about money and power. All the gods are pretend: made up; to relieve gullible people of their hard earned cash. All the people that have been convinced that there is a god should know that the person that did the convincing had something to gain from their believing.

Whao zaatheist! What about the millions of other properly runned churches all over the world? Saying God does not exist because people make mistakes is like saying dictionaries doesnt exist because you make spelling mistakes! Sorry...the church is actually made up of people who were the worst of the bad the Bible so you can understand, not to find arguments to support your poisoned theories.

Hello Mauritz Reid poll from September 2011 [Canadians Split On Whether Religion Does More Harm in the World than Good]. It surveyed Canadians about religion. Only 16% of Canadians attend church every week and about 30% of Canadian say they don't believe in God. Only 53% of Canadians say they believe in God. This is good news for those of us who think the trend is in the right direction. It's bad news for those who think that the religious views of society can't be changed. * "In the U.S., all the major (Christian) denominations have seen their numbers decline in recent years, but the Catholic Church has taken the biggest hit. Since the 1960s, four American-born Catholics have left the church for every one who has converted, according to a 2009 Pew study. In 2008 alone, Catholic membership declined by 400,000. More than 1,000 parishes have closed since 1995. * Secularism in America: Growing trend concerns Catholic leaders worldwide * The Dutch Reformed Church officially lost 20 000 members in 2010 but the real numbers are likely to be much higher.

Evidence for god = 0 And by evidence I mean ordinary, testable evidence and not tautologies. (the bible is evidence of what ancients thought and wrote about which is not evidence for a god). There is no rational evidence of a god. The only way to dispute that notion is to provide compelling evidence to the contrary, and not since the beginning of time has anyone ever produced any compelling evidence. Unless "I can feel him in my heart" or "uncle albert had gout until he prayed to jesus, who cured him of it" is your compelling evidence. ha ha.

@zaatheist You seem to be jealous that you are unable to get your hands on some of the money. From the figures you quote, you also seem to think that those people all became atheists. Really? Pentecostalism is the fastest growing relligion in the world with a staggering 488% between 2001 and 2005. Do the research.

      daryltt - 2012-06-11 08:44

@zaatheist - Jeez you're just as bad as a bible basher. Give it a rest and let people think what they want to think.

      Mauritz Venter - 2012-06-11 09:45

Zaatheist, there is no evidence because you ignore it! Relying on only 5 senses makes you ignore the supernatural part of reality. God deliberately chose faith as the only thing that can please Him, because that is the only thing I can do that is not coming from myself, even that is a gift from God. Stop fighting against religion and see God face to face. Quoting senseless statistics and asking for evidence on your terms will keep you in the dark and without peace.

RichardHud I see you admit to my point about religion and money. No, I am not driven by money.

      zaatheist - 2012-06-11 10:51

@Fanta No I am an atheist I'm not an atheist because its cool. I'm not an atheist because of religious extermism or oppression in some depraved corners of the world. I'm not an atheist because because I don't think evil can exist in a world without a god. I'm not an atheist because because I think science can disprove god. I'm an atheist because of a simple fact: There is no proof for the existence of any gods and the burden of proof lies on religion to provide it. If you propose the existence of something you must follow the scientific method in your defense of is existence. Otherwise I have no reason to listen to you.

      zaatheist - 2012-06-11 10:53

daryltt Exactly! I am a bible basher. Also a basher of Scientology, Islam and all the other thousands of gods and scriptures invented and worshipped by humans.

      richard.hudson.758 - 2012-06-11 11:06

@zaatheist Sure seems like it the way you keep ranting about how much money churches have.

      zaatheist - 2012-06-11 11:18

@RichardHud So you also admit the churches are sitting on lots and lots of money. Money that could be spent on uplifting people from poverty, education, medical assistance. Yeah, I am fixated upon the fact that religions are extracting billions and billions out of the World's economies each year to provide very comfortable livelihoods for the self-appointed representatives of imaginary gods. And non-believers like me subsidise this activity. Clever people invent gods to exercise power over the gullible thus making it easier to extract money from them.

    What an abomination!

      Dylan Dario Sciarappa - 2012-06-11 09:45

Zaathiest if you don't believe in god then that's your problem

      zaatheist - 2012-06-11 12:57

@Dylan None whatsoever. Seems you have the problem.
