US student goes on stabbing spree

2013-04-09 23:08

Washington - A US college student wounded 14 people, two of them critically, in an apparently unprovoked mass stabbing in Texas on Tuesday, police said, announcing that a suspect had been taken into custody.

Authorities were alerted to a "male on the loose, stabbing people", shortly after 16:00 GMT at Lone Star College near Houston, Sheriff Adrian Garcia, of the Harris County Sheriff's Office, told reporters.

"A suspect has been taken into custody, a white male, that we believe is approximately 21 years of age, and currently enrolled," he said, confirming the reported number of victims, two of whom refused treatment.

"We do not know exactly what type of weapon was used other than to say that it is at this point an unknown instrument, that we don't know whether a knife or some other type of instrument," he added.

The college was placed on lockdown after the alert was raised, with students being taken off campus while buildings were searched for the suspect.

Thomas Gilliland, a spokesperson for the Harris County Sheriff's Office, had earlier told journalists that, according to an initial report, the suspect was wrestled to the ground by a student and arrested by police.

He could not confirm the type of weapon used, but cited varying reports that said it was a pencil or a knife.

An alert on the school's website said the incident occurred "near and around the Health Science Center and remains an active crime scene with changing and evolving information".

The college was due to reopen on Wednesday.

Robert Rasa of the CyFair Volunteer Fire Department, had described the scene on campus as "pretty chaotic."

If guns were the problem NRA meetings would be a blood fest. Its also strange that its always at a school, college or place where no-one else carries a gun.

      trevor.bailet - 2013-04-11 07:37

@ james. no deaths in this one so no need @ ninja. Strange that its always in a country with lots of violence and a gun culture. @ Matthew. Low homicide and very few gun deaths in the UK.

Damn there goes my right to bare Pencils, I bet they ban pencils longer than 30cm. they can do what they want but I'm not ever going to give up my Assault pencil.

      Jeremy Richard Schaffner - 2013-04-10 06:36

As I understand it, you will be allowed to carry one assault pencil only, unconcealed, as long as the pencils are of the projecting type with withdrawable leads, and as long as you only have one 0.5mm lead in it and none in the 'magazine' inside the pencil. Officers of the law will have the authority to stop and search individuals and examine their pencils at any time.

Oh come off it King, the US is violent indeed, the country being founded on violence through genocide and slavery, which have continued to this day. The US government is so corrupt that people have stopped commenting on it, it's called "institutionalised corruption". Do Americans behave in a civilised manner, whether at home or abroad. The only difference is that common criminals in US are punished by their laws, while the big fish corporate type and politicians have a field day! Stop talking out of your arse!

      Michael Tetley - 2013-04-10 08:02

Too true. The problem is psychological. Those who wish to harm others will always find the means to do so. Take away one and they'll just find something else instead. Firearms, knives, tools etc. are inanimate objects. It's people who make the choices, good or bad.

"The problem is psychological." Maybe the American society is psychotic to this massive extent, brainwashed by wars, violence, uncontrolled gun ownership, fear, paranoia, crime, religion, militarism, Fox News, and mixed with junk food and an ever increasing consumption of "happy drugs".

      AllcoveredinNinjas - 2013-04-10 10:49

      Fidel Chavista - 2013-04-10 12:03

You should be applying your own theory on the Timeslive article instead of trying to create some parity on an article that has nothing to do with South Africa. Do you always indulge in this kind of self-flagellation, or just a paid shill thumping your keyboard frantically in the basement of the US State Department.

      AllcoveredinNinjas - 2013-04-10 13:42

I see how it works , double standard .The incident gives you grounds to label Americans psychotic by some theory but low and behold the situation is reversed. So character assassinate .

  • Jim Bean - 2013-04-10 07:50

This is so painful because as far as I know US is the safest country, the Time Magazine journalist said South Africa was the most violent country with high crime rate and made Oscar looked as if he murdered 100 people. Lets hope this boy will explain what went wrong here and get a sentence he deserve.

  • Wendy Anne Jager - 2013-04-10 09:33

  • HendrikAfrica - 2013-09-21 14:16

These Americans, this guy just wanted to make a point that it is not due to the fact that Americans carry guns that they attack and kill, they can do it with knifes or even pencils. It is because they are frustrated with life and its ups and downs. It is when some of them feel that they were unjustly treated and they apparently have no avenue through which these wrong doings and related frustrations can be dealt with that they assault their fellow human beings. America need a special channel that is; - unbiased, - where people will feel and be safe from even legal authorities - that will look at each one's specific case of 'unfair treatment' - have the authority to resolve/deal with these problematic situations - that is regulated by law not to reveal the person's identity nor the problematic situation that bother him/her BEFORE that person becomes so agitated and frustrated about his/her unfair treatment and it BURST into a scene of mass killings with or without guns.
