US warns against new Gaza flotilla

2011-06-25 07:25

Washington - The United States on Friday warned activists against plans to send a new aid flotilla to challenge Israel's blockade of the Gaza Strip, saying it would be irresponsible and dangerous.

"Groups that seek to break Israel's maritime blockade of Gaza are taking irresponsible and provocative actions that risk the safety of their passengers," state department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said in a statement, adding that there were established ways to move humanitarian aid to Gaza.

"We urge all those seeking to provide such assistance to the people of Gaza to use these mechanisms, and not to participate in actions like the planned flotilla," Nuland said.

Israel on Wednesday said it had warned the United Nations that a new aid flotilla - which activists say could depart from European ports in coming days - could result in "dangerous consequences".

Israel has made clear it will prevent any new flotilla from reaching Gaza. A year ago, nine Turkish activists, including one with dual US-Turkish nationality, were killed in an Israeli raid on a similar convoy.

The Israeli military came under fierce criticism for the May 2010 raid, which led to a severe deterioration of its ties with Turkey.

The United States, Israel's most important ally, has backed Israel's blockade of Gaza, which the Palestinian Islamist Hamas group seized from forces loyal to Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007.

Palestinians believe the Israeli sea blockade is illegal and say it is helping strangle Gaza's underdeveloped economy.

Nuland said there were "established and efficient" mechanisms for getting humanitarian aid into Gaza, and the situation there had improved significantly over the last year with a broader range of goods and materials available.

But she said that recent weapons seizures and periodic rocket and mortar attacks from Gaza against Israeli civilians illustrated the ongoing necessity for Israel to screen Gaza-bound cargo.

"We underscore that delivering or attempting or conspiring to deliver material support or other resources to or for the benefit of a designated foreign terrorist organisation, such as Hamas, could violate US civil and criminal statutes and could lead to fines and incarceration," Nuland said.

      Roman Moroni - 2011-06-25 12:16

Suport you on this one Ian, for the sole reason that the people involved in this flotilla and their allies (Hamas et al.) are not interested in a peaceful solution to the middle eastern problems, they are only interested in confrontation and extermination of the Israeli state.

      TheWally - 2011-06-28 09:33

FACT: There will be Holocaust survivors aswell as Christian Priests and Jewish Rabbi's on these Flotilla, just like there was in the last Flotilla. you must really hate these people badly aswell hey!?

  • WATCHMAN - 2011-06-25 09:00

When they play with Israel they play against the God of Israel and the God of all. Israel is a land promised to the Jews and God is going to finish His work with them when they will finally accept His Son Jesus (Yeshua) as Messiah!

      Romans8 - 2011-06-25 09:10

Well said Watchman. Israel is a sovereign state and those that burden themselves with them according to God's word will get cut in pieces. Those that sympathise with the enemies of the nation of Israel will bear the consequences of their actions!

      ayubmy - 2011-06-25 09:51

Why dont you visit Bethlehem and speak to Christians living there under Israeli rule... You may want to change your mind.... Dont forget... Opression never lasts forever... remember Apartheid.. didnt last forever..

      Khalid - 2011-06-25 09:59

The jews are historically known for persecuting their prophet Moses (Peace be upon him) and many other people who preached the word of god. The jewish nation are rebellious and their fate is already predicted in Al Quraan so as muslims we are rest assured ;)

      za101 - 2011-06-25 11:48

then where was god this past 2000 years when jews were thrown out of the area israel/palestine?

      CPII - 2011-06-25 16:14

Khoza, what race do you think Jesus is from hhmmmm.......enlighten us with borderless wisdom please.

      peter benton - 2011-06-26 04:25

you must be daft. Jews have no heaven nor do they have a hell and the don't have a devil either. They would have to convert to Christianity do do as you say. You have lost your marbles if you think that's going to happen. You are goium and you are deluded.

Problem with your statement watchmen is that Jesus was a Palestinian

  • knightomalta - 2011-06-25 09:20

@Ian @Watchman, are you guys serious? Firstly Watchman, Jewish people don't believe in Jesus, not that it matters. Killing people in the name of religion goes against what any God preaches. The Israeli's endured terrible and inexcusable treatment at the hands of the Nazi and it saddens me to see them do the same thing to another nation. Educate yourself about the middle east. It is not Islam vs Christianity or Judaism, this is about treating all people with respect and dignity. Palestinians are being kicked off their own land, all they want is independence and to co-exist with Israelis as neighbours and equals.

      ayubmy - 2011-06-25 09:48

Well said... Oppression of the Palestinians by the Israelis has to end....Just like Apartheid in South Africa. Leave religion out of the equation.... remember that humanity comes first.

      GonnyVonYuri - 2011-06-26 10:54

ayubmy - the fakeistinians are not oppressed - they chose to send there children to blow themselves up in israeli busses hence the restrictions israel has put on them - if they chose peace they would have freedom to move unrestricted in israel but they choose violence bcos this is the way of their prophet of evil.

      WATCHMAN - 2011-06-28 08:44

knightomalta - That is where you are wrong. Have you ever heard of Jews for Jesus. Look them up on the internet. Further there is growing number of Jews in Israel which we refer to as Mesianic Jews who believe that Jesus (Yeshua) is the Messiah and are often persecuted for their faith by the Orthodox Jews. A great number of Jews are open to reading the Bible and many in the Israeli Defence Force are reading the Bible.

      umlaut - 2011-06-28 09:25

"South Africans will never see freedom until we are freed from malema" Umlaut. Statements are made by different people for different reasons. Here mandela showed his solidarity with the palestinians. Someone else could have written:-South Africans will never see freedom until the palestinians let Israel in peace and stop denying them the right to exist. There will probably never ever be peace on this earth--in the end you have to defend what you have, because given the oportunity, someone else will come and take it from you. Israel will hold onto what they have for as long as they can, and the palestinians will have to make peace with that.

  • MadMatt_88 - 2011-06-25 10:12
