Ukraine: Russia invades with 2 tank attacks

2014-08-28 16:26

ovazovsk - Two columns of Russian tanks and military vehicles fired Grad missiles from Russia at a border post in southeastern Ukraine, then rolled into the country on Thursday as its outgunned border guards fled, a top Ukrainian official said.

The comments by Colonel Andriy Lysenko, a spokesperson for Ukraine's National Security Council, and other statements from Nato, the pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine and the United States left no doubt that the Russian military had invaded southeastern Ukraine.

A top Nato official said at least 1 000 Russian troops have poured into Ukraine with sophisticated equipment and have been in direct "contact" with Ukrainian soldiers, resulting in casualties.

"Russian forces have entered Ukraine," Ukraine's president declared on Thursday, cancelling a foreign trip and calling an emergency meeting of his security council.

President Petro Poroshenko summoned the council as the strategic southeastern town of Novoazovsk appeared firmly under the control of separatists and their Russian backers, a new front in the war in eastern Ukraine between the separatists and Poroshenko's government in Kiev. "Today the president's place is in Kiev," Poroshenko said.

Russian stock markets dived as fears grew that the country was escalating its role in the conflict, a move that could provoke the U.S. and European Union to impose further sanctions on Russian businesses and individuals. Russia's MICEX index dropped nearly 2% on Thursday, and major Russian state banks VTB and Sberbank dropped more than 4%.

Brig Gen Nico Tak told reporters at Nato headquarters that the ultimate aim of Russia was to stave off defeat for the separatists and turn eastern Ukraine into a "frozen conflict" that would destabilize the country "indefinitely."

Nato estimated that another 20 000 Russian troops were right over the Russian border.

Tak said the 1 000 Russian troops operating inside Ukraine was a conservative estimate and provided satellite imaginary showing an incursion of great sophistication. He refused to specify exactly what the "contact" with Ukrainian troops was.

Two columns

Lysenko said the missiles from Russia were fired about 11:00 and about an hour and a half later, two columns, including tanks and other fighting vehicles began an attack. They entered Ukraine from Veselo-Voznesenka and Maximovo of the Rostov region in Russia.

The leader of the insurgency, Alexander Zakharchenko, said in an interview on Russian state television that 3 000 to 4 000 Russians have fought on the separatist side since the armed conflict began in April.

The US government accused Russia of orchestrating a new military campaign in Ukraine, helping rebel forces expand their fight and sending in tanks, rocket launchers and armoured vehicles.

"These incursions indicate a Russian-directed counter-offensive is likely underway in Donetsk and Luhansk," US State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said on Wednesday. She voiced concern about overnight deliveries of materiel in southeast Ukraine near Novoazovsk and said Russia was being dishonest about its actions, even to its own people.

Russian forces, she said, are being sent48km inside Ukraine, without them or their families knowing where they are going. She cited reports of burials in Russia for those who have died in Ukraine and wounded Russian soldiers being treated in a St Petersburg hospital.

      Mark Harold Jones - 2014-08-29 11:12

@nikola. first of all 300 ex SA soldiers of executive outcomes sorted out in Angola, in one year, what your pathetic army and cuba could not in 10 years. The Cuban soldiers and Russian officers were experts at shooting backwards over their shoulders as they ran. Most exit wounds were on the front of their stiffs. You clearly don't know what you are talking about. good luck with your death wish. based on your childish comments I bet you have never been in a war. Me thinks you would be the first to run. Its not like playstation you know.

      Nikola Jevtic - 2014-08-29 11:22

Putin knows that Obama's indecision over everything will let him get away with it.

  • Nikola Jevtic - 2014-08-28 16:43

I hope Russia wipes out these Western Dogs of war!

      Jimmy Don - 2014-08-28 17:00

Your hope is severely misplaced, this action is in fact a huge escalation to an already volatile situation and believe me there will be no winners if all the major powers get's sucked into yet another world war...

      Nikola Jevtic - 2014-08-28 17:04

Jimmy you are completely correct but the west seems to want to do as it pleases, it owns the media and the peoples minds! Russia is one of the few countries in a position to stand against them and Russians are not scared of dying

      Geel Slang - 2014-08-28 17:07

Unless Russia invades an EU nation there will be no war. Putin might be crazy but he is not stupid.

      Louie Walshe - 2014-08-28 17:25

Geel you are spot on about Putin, the real problem is that craziness and stupidity can both be found in western foreign policy. War is not far off when one considers geopolitical power struggles currently in full swing. Add to this a global economy on the verge of collapse and BINGO, the world is at war.

      Scanity1 - 2014-08-28 18:07

Love the West. That is why all refugees from all over the world clamber to get into the West.Dont see them running to Russia and other Despotic countries in the World.

      Jon Smit - 2014-08-28 18:17

      Nikola Jevtic - 2014-08-28 18:33

Where were you Jon? Who ran away?

  • Jacob Maermerrie - 2014-08-28 16:46

And now we also know why the trucks that carried the " humanitarian aid " carried only 20% of the normal payloads__the rest were Russian soldiers transported to within striking range of the Ukraine border. Where are those idiots like Mark and Vox Populi now ; oh, I know__they want proof!!

      Nikola Jevtic - 2014-08-28 16:56

220 trucks drove straight through the border into Ukraine despite America and Nato's best efforts without one shot being fired... if Russia wanted to end this they could end it tomorrow

      Jon Smit - 2014-08-28 18:26

Why dont you guys get DSTV and watch RT and get the otherside of the story. You will be surprised at the lies in the CIA backed western media, it is an eye opener. By the way thisnis also the view of American actors like steven segal.

      theJoPot - 2014-08-28 17:15

At the end of the day both sides are spewing propaganda. The question is, why does Russia need to take over Ukraine? If they have peaceful intentions, let it be decided by the people in a referendum, not by staging a war.

      Louie Walshe - 2014-08-28 17:35

Russia does not need to take over Ukraine, Russia is simply curbing NATO expansion on its borders and protecting its vital security interest in Crimea. Washington's lack of respect for other country's sovereignty is the actual problem here. A double standard that has brought terrorism home to the people in the west.

  • Dean Stander - 2014-08-28 17:15

Anything to crush the western regime! Go kick some ass Putin/

  • theJoPot - 2014-08-28 17:15

Thank you my brother. Most listen to CNN lies too much. Where is the evidence about MH17 plane crush. USA doesn't want to supply satellite images. They Kiev shot the plane.

  • Kabelo Magadlela - 2014-08-28 17:39

Kiev attacked Russian borders what did NATO say. Nothing. I support Russia move to keep peace. Because CIA is in Ukraine but nothing is sad about that.

      Nikola Jevtic - 2014-08-28 18:17

What Kabelo is saying is that the US has been meddling in the affairs of Ukraine their democratically elected president was overthrown by US baked Nazis, theres even phone conversations in which senior Whit House officals discuss who will take power in Ukraine?

      Nikola Jevtic - 2014-08-28 19:50

Big difference this is Russias neighbour America nato and Russia signed an agreement after the cold war that nato would not expand or enter Ukraine, Ukraine is full of Russians and crimea was a gift to Ukraine from Russia I could go on...

      Siya - 2014-08-28 20:39

Donovan, this is the war between the yanks and Russia. Ukraine is just a pawn. To stop this nonsense, the yanks must stop causing chaos thousands of kilometres away their boarders. Whenever the yanks poke their nose a stinking odour materialise. Now they are poking it in Ukraine.

      Nikola Jevtic - 2014-08-29 09:29

Whatever you think the governments are doing! It's far worse?

  • Krzysiek Bernat - 2014-08-28 21:04

Well, Russia didn't steal a land in Ukraine, it is the Ukrainian who stole polish and russian land. Now, you can go back to books. :) (e.g. Khmelnytsky Uprising)

      Krzysiek Bernat - 2014-08-28 21:05

      it is the Ukraine* :P

  • Jonathan McCarthy - 2014-08-29 00:13

Russia should take Novorossyia under their protection and make it an autonomous repulic, either under the Russian federation or Ukraine forcing Kiev to accept their autonomous status. That is the best solution possible for the people of Donbass.

  • Kevin Heydenrych - 2014-08-29 12:07

To those supporting the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops backed by armour: 1. To justify it in terms of American "hypocrisy" is so weak. I fully agree that the US and the west are no angels, but in this case this means nothing. The Ukranians themselves picked sides and Putin's reaction is about economics, spheres of influence, trying to drum up domestic support, and his ego. It has NOTHING to do with so called Ukrainian "fascism" or western "hypocrisy". 2. And the irony of accusing the West of duplicty is galling. Russia has been supporting rebels with weapons, and now its actual units. All the time denying it. Putin pretends his hands have been clean, but they have been dirty all along. He is as two-faced (if not more so) than any current western leader. 3. And the worst, for me, is lies he spreads to justify his actions: that the Ukrainians are all "fascists". What crap. Of course there are fascists in the Ukraine. But its not the majority. And who is Putin to abuse this concept when the neo nazis are active in Russia, which he counts as supporters. This idea that Putin is left-wing "bastion" against western capitalist hypocrisy is a complete lie. The Russia he has presided over has become more right-wing and is nothing more than crony capitalism supporting the very wealthy. And the war he has created is disgusting, as evil as any American interventions in years past. Putin is certainly a first class strategist. But no saviour. Please take him off his pedestal.
