West Bank mosque damaged by fire

2012-11-19 13:00

Ramallah - Vandals set fire to the entrance of a West Bank mosque on Monday, damaging the door, in an attack that villagers blamed on Jewish settlers.

Residents of the Palestinian village of Orif, near the city of Nablus, said a group of settlers from a nearby settlement came to the mosque before dawn, poured gasoline on an old carpet near the mosque's door, and set it ablaze.

"The settlers tried to break into the mosque, but it was locked," Orif resident Issam al-Safadi said.

"So they settled with burning the old carpet and the door."

The Israeli army said it was called to the scene and is investigating the incident.

Israeli rights group B'tselem says vigilante settler groups are suspected of vandalising at least 10 mosques in the Israeli-occupied West Bank since 2009.

About 500 000 Israelis and 2.5 million Palestinians live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, areas which, along with the Gaza Strip, were captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war and which Palestinians claim as their own for a future state.

Most world powers deem the Jewish settlements illegal, something Israel disputes.

The mosque vandalism occurred on the sixth day of a conflict in Gaza Strip, with Israeli forces bombarding the enclave and Palestinians firing hundreds of rockets into southern Israel.

Isn't it funny how these people call the Jewish SETTLERS? Just like in South Africa. There are HUNDREDS of reports, eye witness and travelers alike, poets and more, that proclaim the area known as Palestine a deserted, isolated, desolated area between 1400's and 1900s. The Arabs don't even HAVE the world Palestine - they use Filistine. Palestine comes from the Greek and Roman languages, referring to the AREA, not a nation or people. An early cencus indicate MORE Jews in Gaza than Arabs. The flag of the Palestine people is similar to Jordan. WHY? Because in 1948's when the land was divided, Trans Jordan was GIVEN to the ARABS. They Arabs MOVED to Israel seeking jobs and better living conditions due to the development going on there. The parts now "settled" by the Jews, were ceased after several Arab states made WAR with Israel, and LOST. Hence, they lost their land, after THEY were the aggressors. Wonderful world we live in, where facts are distorted daily!

You don't know what you are talking about. It's as easy as that. Go talk to the archeologists who study the area.

atheitis the old temple is under the Al Acqsa mosque. It wasn't built during the life time of Neanderthals. It appears to have been built first.....just an observation.

Consider something new. the 'Jewish settlements' are just Jews living in an area which then must be protected because they would otherwise be subject to individual attacks incessantly. So they clump together, seek protection of the Jewish state, and now they are existing on 'stolen' land. Are there any Christian families in the West bank? Are there Christian communities grouping themselves within an enclave, perhaps protecting themselves from attack from Muslim neighbours. Would they then be Christian settlers, who have stolen the land that they live on? Basically, if you are Jewish, there is no place for you in Muslim arab countries. This is the reality and some have the gall to call Israel racist and an apartheid state.

Of course there WERE other inhabitants back in the day, long, long ago, in PARTS of Palestine. But their descendants are long assimilated by now. The people NOW claiming to be "Palestinians" are NOT descendants of those people. They weren't even THERE (in Palestine) as early as 1900's. And even this fact begs the question: Where exactly DO the Jews come from? Genetics also provides great insight.

And so the NEws24 propaganda machine grinds forth... Every article is inherently pro Islamic. Interesting.

@Butch.poulter the Jews deserted GOD many times as history tells us, an arrogant nation that finally after many miracles happening in front of them,eg the red sea opening up to them after being saved from Pharoah's clutches, they still said we first want to see GOD before we believe.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-11-19 21:43

Actually Squeegee, this is not true. News24 can churn out what it likes, but the majority of commentators set the record straight.

Their curiously absent god has deserted them… Now, but completely unaware of it, all they have left is their precious victim fantasy (international media complicit) – they've earned my pity.

      butch.poulter - 2012-11-19 13:57

GOD will NEVER desert his people, the Jewish nation.

If anything, it is the god of Islam which grows weaker and more ineffective by the minute. The humiliation and angst of tiny Israel in the midst of once mighty Islam is driving the Islamists insane - quite literally. Lemmings jumping off the cliff in mass suicide.

Hebrew graffiti - Israeli news say the handwriting looks like it was written by a 5 year old... maybe a red flag attack by Arabs to try and give Israel a bad name as usual... even though not for sure... my money is on Arabs vandalising their own Mosque to get brownie point - they use their own children as human shield so I would not put it past them. If this was an Israeli who did this he/she should rot in jail…

Prof. Noam Chomsky: When Israel, in the occupied territories now, claim that they have to defend themselves, they are defending themselves in the sense that any military occupier has to defend itself against the population that they’re crushing.

Two groups of people resented and opposed the creation of an Israeli homeland for the Jewish people after the horrors of World War II, notwithstanding that the amount of land was a tiny, minuscule slither relative to their vast lands, and Jewish people had inhabited that land for millennia. Guess which groups that was, and is. Racist Muslims and White Supremacists.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-11-19 20:05

Israel was created in 1948 from 52% of the land formerly occupied by the Jewish and Palestinian people, and Palestine 43%. Most of the Israeli territory was the Negev Desert. Jerusalem fell into neither territory. Palestinians with their unelected, self-serving neighbors declared war on Israel the very next day. In the 1960's they even invaded Israel twice. Full military invasions. The result: Israel survived and pushed them back, gaining territory in the process. This is the origin of what you wrongly call "stealing land". There have been almost daily attacks by Palestinians, incited by their self-serving unelected backers. Palestinians even teach their children at Kindergarten to attack Israel, rather than be peaceful. Children. Kindergarten. From day one, and even today it's wage war on Israel. Israel defends herself. Yes sometimes going too far, which is unacceptable, but self-defense nonetheless. All that needs to happen is for Palestinians to choose peace side by side with Israel. This is more likely going forward now because the unelected dictators are being removed from power by their people, one by one. They will no longer use the Palestinians for their own internal political ploys.

      larry.lachman.54 - 2012-11-19 21:48

The west bank, along with gaza neddn't be occupied. All that is required is for the Palestinians to accept Israel's terms of peace, which right it won by winning the 1967 war. If you start a war and lose, then you pay the price. Palestinians do not want to pay the price, so they will pay a dearer price until they acceed.
