Washington - US security officials are investigating suspicious activity in the White House computer network, an official said late on Tuesday.

"In the course of assessing recent threats, we identified activity of concern on the unclassified [White House] network," a White House official told dpa on condition of anonymity.

"In this case, we took immediate measures to evaluate and mitigate the activity."

The official said that the computers and systems of the presidential office were undamaged, though some of the unclassified network was affected. Security responses to the possible hacking caused some temporary outages for White House users.

Earlier on Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said he had ordered his agency to enhance physical security at federal buildings in Washington and nationwide, citing "the continued public calls by terrorist organisations for attacks on the homeland and elsewhere, including against law enforcement and other government officials."
