Athens - Winter storms wreaked havoc across Greece on Wednesday, cutting off access to villages, disrupting sea travel and leaving the ancient Acropolis covered in snow.

Gale force winds in the Aegean Sea caused a Cyprus-flagged cargo ship, Good Faith, to run aground.

The Merchant Marine Ministry said rescue crews were rushing to the northern part of the island of Andros to save its 22 crewmen, adding that the vessel was taking in water.

The ship, which was empty of cargo, was traveling from the Greek port of Eleusis to Odessa in the Black Sea.

Freezing temperatures have cut off many roads across northern Greece, forcing hundreds of schools to remain closed.
