Moscow - A young Russian woman is facing up to 10 years in prison after agreeing to help a man die after his previous 10 suicide attempts over past five years went awry, a newspaper report said on Wednesday.

Oleg Tatarinov, a 27-year-old resident of the central Tula region, lost his desire to live after his mother died when he was 10, mass-circulation tabloid Moskovsky Komsomolets said.

Over the past five years he had tried to commit suicide 10 times. But after those attempts failed, he found a 20-year-old woman who agreed to help him die.

According to the plan, the young woman - whom the man found online and who herself survived several suicide attempts, including by slitting her wrists - was to bury him in a forest after stabbing him in the heart with a knife.

Last November, the pair went into the woods with two knives and a shovel where the man dug himself a grave and cut out a cross in the clothes to mark the spot where the woman was to stab him, the newspaper said.

The woman hit the man with the knife but narrowly missed his heart. She then panicked and called an ambulance. The man survived, and the woman is now facing up to 10 years in prison.

Prosecutors said she was promised 11 000 rubles ($370) for her services.
