Yemen teen dies after hand cut off

2011-09-30 22:01

Aden - A 15-year-old boy died in Yemen overnight after al-Qaeda militants severed his right hand as punishment for allegedly stealing electric cables, a medic said.

Maher Ali's hand had been severed by sword on Saturday by the militants in front of dozens of residents of Jaar, in the troubled southern province of Abyan, witnesses and medics said.

Ali had "died of wounds he sustained when al-Qaeda militants cut off his hand, after losing "too much blood," the medical official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The teenager was one of two Yemenis to have had their hands cut off by Qaeda militants for stealing in recent days. The second, a 26-year-old man, had his hand cut off on Sunday.

"They brought in the accused with a doctor who drugged him and cut off his right hand," one witness told AFP.

In both cases, militants paraded the limbs to residents of Jaar, demonstrating their fate if they were caught stealing.

Under a very strict interpretation of Islamic law, theft is punishable by cutting off the thief's hand.

Since May, al-Qaeda linked militants known as the Partisans of Sharia (Islamic Law) have taken control of several towns in Abyan, including the province's capital Zinjibar.

On September 10, the Yemeni government announced its troops had regained control over Zinjibar but officials later told AFP parts of the city remained in militant hands.

The town of Jaar remains under militant control and residents say there is currently no government presence in the town.

    barbaric bastards!!!!

Maybe so, but those type of punishments would go a long way to reduce crime in SA. If you know that's the law, and you would like to keep both hands, don't steal, rob or hijack cars - it that simple. If you like to live, don't kill or rape - it is also that simple.

@ Wiseoldman - Corporal punishment can be appropriate in some instances as a deterrant ie Canings etc. However, this barbaric mob justice is no better than a kangaroo court imposing a necklacing on somebody, and is certainly inappropriate to say the least.

What happens if you are falsely accused, do they sow your hand back on?

      Wyse-man - 2011-10-01 08:10

No,they cut off the other hand to ballance your body.and then they will know above reasonable doubt that you will never steal anything ever.

Don't forget, Muhammed enslaved, burned the best libraries in the world, butchered, and encouraged rape by "what your right hand has taken". I say us Christians outta do the same thing to people and actions we dislike, Maybe then you'd see the Stalinist hard core left Obama lovers groveling about our feet wondering 'why do they hate us...and cancelling NASA for "Muslim outreach." The MSM might just start liking Christians then...It's sick how much might does make right...the appeasers and articulators make money and write "history" following behind these 'narcisstic misanthropes'. I say we make em bend over and give it to em. You'd be surprised how many MSM talking heads and wanna be theologians would say 'Hmmm, he's gotta point...he's a really moral person...at least, I like his vision'. Gimme a bugout shelter...Imma leaving!
