Zawahiri not a bin Laden: US

2011-05-08 16:29

Washington - Ayman al-Zawahiri, the Egyptian surgeon long considered al-Qaeda's number two, "is not anywhere near the leader that Osama bin Laden was," a top White House official said on Sunday.

"Our assessment is that he is not anywhere near the leader that Osama bin Laden was," White House National Security Advisor Tom Donilon told NBC's Meet The Press show.

The terror network responsible for the September 11 terror attacks on the United States has vowed to avenge the US killing of bin Laden.

"They as an organisation will have to work themselves through some sort of succession," Donilon said.

Killing bin Laden, he said, was "a real blow".

It's nice to know the US is paying such close attention to this dangerous group of people. The chances of mass destruction is therefore highly unlikely. And it's not just the US, it's the freer world too, plus the Middle East is waking up. The world is becoming new. It will hardly be recognizable ten years from now, for the better.

Except in Sub suharen Africa, where we are going backwards at an almighty rate - thanks to very weak leadership and extremely stupid voters.

@Slg - the world will never be a safe place as long as one country bestows on itself the role of an "international police" while international organisations like the UN, ICC are rendered toothless. The situation may get better in the short term but worse in the long term.

I agree with you wmutahi that the UN must be made stronger.

This guy as a surgeon has obviously made an oath to save peoples lives(all doctors make this oath), yet he recruits suicide bombers to sow death & destruction on his fellow beings. One of Hitlers henchmen was know as the "Doctor of Death". I guess a "surgical" strike from a drone will sort out the Herr Dokter?.

Keep taking out leaders and soon no one will want the job. Bet the job must come with danger pay and no long term insurance.

The killing of the americans during the twin tower collapse saved a lot of jobs. Even created some axtra once. The point is: Some have to die for others to live!
