A couple travelling to their wedding were killed in a horrific car pile-up, involving five tractor trailers.

Kate Schurtz and her groom Joseph Kearney from New Jersey, US, were killed on Wednesday, 15 November while travelling to Pittsburgh to tie the knot, NBC News reports.

A tractor-trailer struck the couple’s car and dragged it into another, setting off a chain reaction crash.

Their car, along with two trailers, caught fire, People reports.

Joseph’s aunt, Mary Heinle, paid tribute to her nephew and his fiancée on social media.

“Our nephew Joseph Kearney and his beautiful fiancée Kate Schurtz were killed in an automobile accident on their way home for their wedding to be held that day,” Mary wrote.

“Our memories will help carry us through. They were truly the brightest shining lights snuffed out way too soon.”

In an obituary Kate is described as an “adventurous” person.

“She will be remembered for her voracious appetite for reading, love of cooking, and trailblazing new adventures with Joseph,” it stated.

Her funeral will take place on Tuesday, 20 November, The Washington Post reports.
