Vienna - A Moroccan asylum-seeker has been detained in Austria for allegedly planning a terror attack in Salzburg over the Christmas and New Year period, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old was arrested on Monday in a refugee centre in the small Alpine resort town of Fuschl, 20km east of Salzburg, close to the German border.

The man is suspected of "belonging to a terrorist organisation", the prosecutor's office in Salzburg said in a statement.

Authorities opened a probe last month after being tipped off about an "alleged terror attack in Salzburg around Christmas or New Year", it added.

During Monday's raid, police found more than €8 000 in cash and several electronic devices.

The suspect is in custody and investigations are ongoing.

Austria has received more than 130 000 asylum-seekers since 2015, as Europe grapples with its worst migration crisis since 1945.

Several of the attackers behind last November's deadly attacks in Paris transited through Austria with false papers among the flow of desperate migrants heading toward western and northern Europe.

In December 2015, an Algerian and a Pakistani were arrested in Salzburg and extradited to France over their alleged intent to take part in the Paris attacks, which left 130 people dead a month earlier.

And in September this year, Austrian police also detained two of their accomplices, a Moroccan and an Algerian, in Salzburg. Their trial is set to begin on February 2.
