Authorities say gunmen in Colombia have killed a police officer stationed at a border bridge that connects the nation to Venezuela.

Police say the attack happened late Monday morning when two armed men seen walking along the river that divides Colombia and Venezuela approached a customs and migration post at the Jose Antonio Paez International Bridge.

The suspects then fired at two officers on duty.

Officials say that 26-year-old officer Jeison Bejarano was killed while another policeman and a security guard were injured.

Arauca Gov. Ricardo Alvarado said authorities have not determined who is responsible, but that the gunmen fled running toward the border.

The border state of Arauca has been a hotbed for criminal activity and rebel groups like the National Liberation Army.
