A base jumper plunged to his death after his parachute failed to open in time and he crashed to the ground.

The 50-year-old man, whose name hasn’t been released yet, died instantly when he hit the rocks at a sandy beach in Nazare, Portugal, on 16 November, Daily Mail reports.

The nearby mountain cliffs are a popular base-jumping spot and thrillseekers often upload videos of their jumps onto social media.

In a video taken by a distressed witness the horrifying sequence of events leading up to Monday’s tragedy can be seen.

Maritime Police chief Paulo Agostinho said the man, a German tourist who was jumping with a Portuguese friend, fell 310 feet (around 94m).

Another man, reportedly a third base jumper, can be heard saying, “No, no” after witnessing the incident.

A woman can be heard saying, “Oh my God.’ ”

The man’s chute opened only after he’d hit the ground, The Sun reports.

Police and firefighters rushed to the scene but there was nothing they could do to save the jumper, Fox News reports.

Psychologists are reportedly helping people who witnessed the horrific incident.
