A 10-year-old boy’s life has been severely altered after his neighbour threw a lit homemade firecracker at him on his birthday.

Aaron Carreto was playing outside his family’s apartment in Compton in the US on July 6, when he heard someone call his name, People reports.

When he turned around, two of his adult neighbours threw an illegal homemade firecracker at him, despite the youngster telling them that he didn’t want it.

The firecracker exploded in Aaron’s hand, causing severe damage to the fingers on his left hand, Honey reports.

“They lit a firework and then they gave it to me,” Aaron told KABC-TV Channel 7. “The fuse went down, I looked at it and then it popped in my hand when I was going to throw it.”

The boy was rushed to Long Beach Memorial hospital and underwent emergency surgeries.

Aaron has had two additional surgeries and was transferred to UCI Medical Centre.

“He is currently recovering from four surgeries he’s had so far (with two more expected in the near future),” his sister Adriana said. “He lost his left hand completely.”

The 10-year-old, who enjoys riding his bike around the neighbourhood with friends and playing video games, has been left psychologically scarred by the incident, according to Adriana.

"He tells his family . . . he feels betrayed by those people around us and wants to start a new life far away from where he grew up," she said.

One of the men who threw the firecracker at Aaron has reportedly been arrested, while the other one remains under investigation, the Los Angeles Times reports.

"Those guys who did this, I don’t want to see them no more," Aaron said. "I just wish that they could be in jail."
