A brave young German boy directed police to the bodies of his mother and 10-year-old brother in a cave on popular holiday island Tenerife in Spain.

According to Daily Mail, the search for the older boy and his mother began on Tuesday after hikers discovered the child.

He told police that his father – who’s since been arrested – had taken the family to a cave and attacked them.

El Pais reported that the little boy managed to escape the cave where his father had trapped him, his mother and brother.

He then ended up wandering around lost for about five hours, before being found crying on a path by a group of hikers.

Since he couldn’t speak Spanish, the hikers brought him to a Civil Guard station where a local resident helped to translate what had happened.

At the station, the boy explained to police that he saw a lot of blood and ran away after his father attacked them.

More than 100 emergency workers and police, aided by helicopters, participated in the search, reports Daily Mail.

They found the bodies on Wednesday afternoon and according to Sky News, the victims appeared to have been beaten.

Spanish police subsequently arrested the boy's father, identified as a 43-year-old German man, at his apartment.

The man had reportedly moved to the island on a permanent basis, while the woman and their two sons had arrived on Monday to visit.

The man is set to appear in court today (Friday).
