Sao Paulo - An explosion in an insecticide factory on the outskirts of Brazil's largest city on Monday injured at least eight people, according to firefighters.

Images in local media showed towering flames and thick clouds of black smoke rising from the factory in Diadema, about 20km south of the city centre.

Of the eight people injured, five were firefighters and three were civilians, according to Cpl Cordeiro of the Sao Paulo state fire service. Nearly 70 firefighters were on the scene.

The factory is in an industrial zone with other factories nearby, but only the one appeared to be on fire. The cause was unclear.
