Cristiano Braga (28), from Minas Gerais in Brazil, is an actor and model who’s been growing his hair for seven years – despite on occasion being called an “ugly woman”.

His striking look has attracted a lot attention – both positive and negative attention. Some women have told him it’s unfair for a man to have luscious locks like his, while some men have accused him of wanting to become a woman.

But the 28-year-old says he’s proud of his mane and will continue to treat it with care.

“I started to let my hair grow in 2012. I have no explanation for letting my hair grow. I looked in the mirror and decided to grow it. I’ve always liked long hair, and I wanted to grow my hair,” he says.

Despite his hair being 6,7m long, he says it only takes him five minutes to wash it.

Cristiano maintains his hair with natural plant oils such as aloe vera, avocado, mint and rosemary.

Though he doesn’t necessarily believe it himself, he says his grandmother says he grew his hair to this length to honour his indigenous ancestry.

“I’ve always found long hair beautiful in both men and women. I don’t know why,” he says. “My great-great-grandmother was indigenous and had her hair down to her feet. It may be something spiritual or cultural.

He maintains his long hair makes him feel protected from the world and he feels much stronger and confident with it.

And for the haters, he has only one thing to day, “Life passes by too fast for us to live our lives according to others. So we must live for ourselves and as we wish.”
