Orlando - The gunman who killed 50 people in a massacre at a Florida gay nightclub early on Sunday, made a 911 phone call shortly before the shooting, pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group, US media reported.

CNN and NBC cited law enforcement sources as saying the shooter, in a call to emergency services in Orlando just before the attack on the Pulse nightclub, pledged allegiance to the Islamic extremist group.

The shooting was the deadliest in US history.

AP meanwhile reported on Sunday night that the shooter, identified as Omar Mateen of Florida, had been known to the FBI before the incident and had been looked at by agents within the last few years.

An official who spoke on condition of anonymity said the matter for which Mateen had come under investigation was "open and closed pretty quickly".

Other details about the matter weren't immediately available.
