A couple received the best possible surprise on their wedding day.

Monica and Dean Berckenhoff from Texas in the US were left shocked when Travis Stufflebean (28), who received their son's heart through organ donation, walked through the doors of the courtroom where they were getting married, Daily Mail reports.

It was reportedly the emotional couple's first time meeting Travis and they were able to hear their son, Colton's, heartbeat.

When Colton suddenly died in a freak accident in 2012, the devastated parents decided to donate their son's organs, Fox News reports.

"He was just the sweetest kid in the entire world and he loved football and he loved the Houston Texans," said Monica's older sister, Amanda McDonald, who arranged for the meeting to happen.

His healthy heart was then donated to Travis, who had been born with a bad heart.

Travis had five previous open-heart surgeries but none of them were successful, ABC 13 reports.

"All through my life, I've dealt with open heart surgery and I've had five, and Colton was the sixth one," Travis revealed.

The overjoyed couple described the moment when they heard the son's heartbeat as something they've "always wanted".

"It's been seven years and it's something we've always wanted," Monica said.

"Because you're bringing the heart back home. To me, this is just a temporary heart. I'm just borrowing it. To me, this is where it belongs. With this wonderful and awesome family," Travis told the elated newlyweds.
