The father of a 20-year-old woman, who died when hit by a boat while diving, says the tragedy could have been avoided.

Dieter Heinz from Austria says he was diving with his daughter, Verena, when the accident happened at Malinksa on the island of Krk in Croatia.

A diving instructor, Dieter says he’s always taken Verena, her sister Corinna (28) and their older twin brothers along when diving.

"We’re all qualified diving instructors and have always lived for the water,” he explained.

“Verena was due to take a diving lesson at a diving school in Malinska at the weekend,” he added.

Dieter, who’d run diving schools in Turkey and Egypt, believes his daughter’s death could have been avoided if the boat wasn’t so close to the shore.

“As part of our training round we dived to about 15 metres for around two minutes. When we’d done this a few times we started to swim towards the shore,” he said recalling the harrowing moment.

This was when a parasailing boat came speeding towards them.

“The boat's driver was driving the boat in a curve so we couldn’t tell where he was going to go next. We had no time to react, we were hit by the boat. We both had a diving buoy with us.”

According to Dieter, the boat shouldn’t have been in the area which was 100 metres from the shore.

“You just can’t imagine it. As the boat came it ripped off our diving suits and fins.”

Verena was struck in the head and died instantly while Dieter sustained minor injuries to his foot.

He pulled his daughter from the water but nothing could be done to resuscitate the young woman.

The mayor of Verena’s hometown of Strobl in Austria, Josef Weikinger, said: “She was well known and popular in the town. Her death is a shock for all of us. Our thoughts are with her family.”

The incident is being investigated by Croatian police divers and Dieter says he hopes the investigation will confirm that the boat was too close to the shore.
