A video of a dancing parrot has attracted more than 200 000 views on Facebook.

When social media user Angerai Khuzhayev from Russia played an electronic mix of a Russian folk song, the last thing he expected was that his Pyrrhura parrot would start dancing.

The parrot broke out into an “Eagle dance”, a traditional dance usually performed by a man imitating an eagle and leaping into the air like the large bird of prey taking flight.

Angerai took a video of the bird performing the dance in sync with the electronic remix of the folk song, which to his surprise racked up thousands of views online.

According to Dr Aniruddh Patel from the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego, United States, parrots are known to enjoy music and unlike most other animals they can synchronise their movements to the beat.

This enables them to form a link between the auditory and motor parts of their own brain.

Dr Aniruddh tested a sulphur-crested cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) that became famous for dancing to the Backstreet Boys in 2007, and since then many similar examples have been filmed.
