Democrats pressure Sanders as rift threatens party

Washington - Democrats are showcasing divisions in their ranks after months when the story of the 2016 presidential campaign focused on divided Republicans.

Simmering tensions between Bernie Sanders backers and other Democrats, including party leaders, burst into the open following an ugly fracas instigated by Sanders supporters at the Nevada Democratic Party convention over the weekend.

Top Democratic Party leaders pressured Sanders to denounce the night of hostility and death threats. He responded with defiance, terming some complaints "nonsense" and reminding the party that "Millions of Americans are outraged at establishment politics."

Hillary Clinton and Sanders battled to a neck-and-neck outcome in Kentucky's presidential primary while Sanders won Oregon and vowed to soldier on. Clinton remains a nearly prohibitive favorite in the delegate count and Sanders has no clear path to victory.
