Washington - US President Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn pleaded guilty on Friday to charges that he lied to the FBI about conversations he had with Russia's ambassador.

"Yes, sir," the retired three-star general and former military intelligence chief said when asked in court if he wanted to plead guilty.

Flynn, Trump's first national security adviser, is the most senior former US official to be charged in an ongoing probe into possible collusion by Trump aides with Russia's meddling in the 2016 US election.

Flynn said on Friday he would co-operate with the probe into possible collusion between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russia, after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI over his contacts with Moscow.

"I recognize that the actions I acknowledged in court today were wrong, and, through my faith in God, I am working to set things right," Flynn said in a statement.

"My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel's Office reflect a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country. I accept full responsibility for my actions."
