Californian police are investigating a video posted on social media showing a teenage boy hurling a cat across the road.

According to Daily Mail, the disturbing 10-second video is said to have been filmed in Ontario, California, and was posted to Snapchat on Friday afternoon.

The 16-year-old, whose name police have not released, is seen lifting the cat with both hands and flinging the terrified kitten into the air.

When the kitten hits the pavement, it cries out in pain.

The Ontario police station released a statement on Twitter on Saturday night saying that the cat, whose name is Spot, survived the horrific ordeal.

“We are investigating the animal cruelty to a cat video. We have located the cat & owner. The cat has leg fracture but is going to be ok,” the department wrote.

The devastated cat owner, who found the stray kitten four months ago, told NBC4 that they refused to watch the upsetting video. “I just want him to know he hurt a victim that can't defend itself,” she said.

Neighbours say the video was filmed nearby the owner’s house in a quiet cul-de-sac.

“I know who he is but I don't know his name,” says neighbour Oscar Romas to CBSLA.

“He hangs around here in the alley all the time. Bunch of little kids doing drugs. They think they're cool. He probably did it just to look cool on video.”

According told BuzzFeed, a spokesperson for the police department said there have been no developments since the Saturday police statement.
