An American grandmother was arrested on Saturday 9 June for putting her two young grandchildren in dog kennels in the back of her car.

Leimome Cheeks (62), from Memphis, Tennessee, has been charged with two counts of child endangerment, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement.

Her arrest came after an anonymous person sent the police department a video – which has since gone viral on social media – of Cheeks letting a child out of the locked kennel.

According to the New York Post, the kids, who are respectively seven and eight years old, told local police that their grandma had them sit in dog cages because there was no place for them in the back seat.

The grandmother later admitted to traveling with the kids in a kennel for an approximately 35-minute-drive.

“Cheeks further said they also drove downtown, however she checked on the children periodically and later removed them from the kennel and put them in the rear seats of her vehicle,” reads a police affidavit obtained by USA Today.

Nikita Blake, one of Cheeks’ neighbours, told ABC News that he couldn’t imagine her doing something like that.

“It’s shocking, it really is,” Blake said.

“I only met her like once, maybe twice. She seems like a nice lady. I couldn’t see her actually doing that.

“I mean it could be an honest mistake. It’s a huge mistake. Get some help, yeah . . . but put her in jail? It’s hard to say.”
