Groom hit by car while trying to escape wedding pranksters

A video of a groom covered in ink, eggs and beer getting hit by a car while trying to escape his prankster friends on 25 November went viral on social media.

The recently posted clip that’s garnered more than three million views showed the ink-covered groom, Ai Guangtao (24), lying motionless on the motorway in Zunyi, a city in southwestern China’s Guizhou Province.

Ai was allegedly chased by his friends on his wedding day – a tradition where the groom – and sometimes the bride – is bullied and pranked for good luck.

He was then pelted with eggs, doused with beer and ink, and even whipped while tied to a pole, his family revealed.

He ran onto the motorway in a bid to escape his friends and was hit by a passing BMW, leaving him with a skull fracture, a brain bleed and numerous other injuries.

According to his new wife, He Xianjing, Ai was rushed to hospital unconscious but fortunately is expected to survive his injuries.

It’s yet to be determined whether his condition will require surgery.

Ai’s family have said they don’t plan to press charges against his friends, who they claim haven’t tried to avoid responsibility for his injuries.

"We won’t hold them accountable," a family member said.

"We just want Ai to recover.”


Social media users have called wedding pranks "outdated" – the custom dates back thousands of years.

Members of the public have also called for the practice to be outlawed.
