A newlywed couple died in a motorcycle accident while on honeymoon on an idyllic Caribbean island.

Russian pair Aleksandra Pomelova (25) and Dmitry Onyshkevich (30), who were visiting the city of San Felipe de Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, reportedly took a scooter ride to the Pico Isabel de Torres mountain to visit a botanical garden and see a replica of Christ the Redeemer, the famous statue in Rio de Janeiro.

On their way back Dmitry reportedly lost control of the vehicle and they crashed into a fence.

Russian media reports the brakes of the scooter failed before the speeding vehicle crashed into the metal fence.

The impact reportedly catapulted the newlyweds into the air and they landed on the ground behind the fence.

Aleksandra is believed to have died instantly. Dmitry was critically injured and rushed to hospital but was declared dead soon after being admitted.

Their bodies will be transported to St Petersburg, Russia.

Aleksandra and Dmitry’s romance apparently began a year ago when Aleksandra visited a tattoo parlour to have her first tattoo done and met Dmitry, who was working there as a tattoo artist.

“They were so happy together,” said a friend of Aleksandra’s known only as Tatiana. “They loved each other so much. They dreamt about having children and wanted to move to the United States.”
