A young Iranian couple have been arrested for hugging in public.

The couple, who got engaged in a shopping mall, were in "contradiction to Islamic rituals", according to a police statement.

A video of the proposal, which took place at a shopping mall in Iranian city of Arak, went viral on social media on Friday. The couple have been slammed for copying "decadent Western culture".

The video shows the unnamed couple standing in the middle of a heart-shaped ring of rose petals next to colourful balloons. The man proposes and after the woman says yes, the woman hugs the man as the crowd cheers.

But the public display of affection has led to the couple’s arrest and subsequent release on bail, The Telegraph reports.

Mahmoud Khalaji, deputy commander of police in Markazi Province, said the young couple had "outraged public decency, which is an influence of the degenerate Western culture".

He went on to say it was unacceptable for the couple "to do whatever is common in other places of the world and disregard mores, culture and religion", Daily Mail reports.

Islamic laws that govern Iran prohibit men and women from exhibiting public displays of affection as the country deems it an influence of "corrupt" Western ideals, according to the Guardian.

The law also prohibits kissing and dancing in public.
