A little boy and his parents have died after falling into a volcanic crater, CNN reports.

The tragedy took place in the Campi Flegrei area, which is situated west of Naples, Italy.

According to The Guardian, the 11-year-old boy walked into a prohibited area at Solfatara di Pozzuoli, one of 40 volcanoes in the area.

Lorenzo is believed to have fainted as a result of inhaling toxic fumes before he fell into the crater.

Metro reports that his father, Massimiliano Carrer (45), tried to rescue his son but the ground gave way beneath him and sent him plunging into the crater too. He also suffocated on the toxic gasses emitted from the volcano.

When his wife, Tiziana Zaramella (42), attempted to help them the crater gave way again. Tiziana also fell in and was asphyxiated.

The couple’s other son, Alessio (7), survived the ordeal after he went running for help.

“Either there was a small explosion, or the ground simply gave way from their weight and they fell into this hole,” national fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari said of the incident.

Armando Guerriero – the owner of the bar where the seven-year-old boy ran to for help – said he’d never witnessed something like this in all his years in business.

“He didn’t know whether they were alive or dead. He was crying and calling his mother’s name. In the 40 years that I’ve worked here, I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The family were on holiday when the fatal accident occurred. According to Metro, the boys were set to start school the next day.
