Berlin - Authorities in the northern German city of Hamburg are warning people in the nearby city centre to close their windows after a fire broke out on a ship in the container port.

A spokesperson for Hamburg's fire brigade says more than 100 firefighters were on the scene on Thursday and further reinforcements were being brought in.

Jan Unger said the fire broke out on the CCNI Arauco, a large container ship flagged in Liberia.
