An American man died an hour after hearing the devastating news that his partner of 35 years was killed in a car accident.

Ron Niemi (59) and Barbara Butler (64), from Michigan, US, both died on Tuesday 10 July, leaving behind nine kids and 25 grandchildren, reports Detroit Free Press.

Barbara had crashed her car at the Bayport intersection in Huron County, US.

The heartbroken father of nine had phoned one of their children with the devastating news before collapsing an hour later. He was rushed to Scheurer Hospital.

“He told me about my mom. His last words on the phone were, ‘I don’t know what I’m gonna do.’ I said, ‘I love you, dad. I’m gonna be there soon’,” Rick Niemi said.

An hour later Rick’s sister Jesse phoned him with some more devastating news.

“I said, ‘Jesse I know. I know about mom. I’m on my way.’ And she said, ‘No, it’s dad. He just collapsed. The ambulance just took him.’ It’s unbelievable,” he said.

Rick told Pix 11 News that the family is now trying to cope with the sudden loss of the couple.

“They had a lot of love for each other,” Rick said.

“Everybody just knew them as Barb and Ron. Everybody knew they were together. You didn’t really see one without the other.

“They were the kind of people that would leave a mark on anybody they ever met.”

The couple were buried on Tuesday 17 July, reports FOX10.
