A mother has been jailed for 15 years after giving her eight-month-old daughter methadone, a heroin substitute, to stop her crying.

In 2015, Tanja Lakic Mahud (38), from Belgrade in Serbia, gave her baby Anja a large amount of the drug, Mirror News reports.

The two were found lying on the floor, Tanya unconscious and baby Anja dead, according to Metro News.

In December 2017, Mahud was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in jail, but she recently took her case to the court of appeal.

Her lawyers argued that she was in "a condition of significantly reduced accountability" when her baby died.

The appeal judge upheld the murder conviction and sentence and she's now serving 15 years in prison.

Mahud initially told the court the drug got into Anja’s system as she was breastfeeding her baby, The USA Times reports.

But later she changed her story and said she gave her methadone "because she was crying”.

“That doesn't mean I wanted to kill her," Mahud said. "I'm a good mother."

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), methadone is medically prescribed for people who are trying to quit heroin and when taken correctly can help them beat their addiction.
