A 37-year-old mother killed herself and her four-year-old son when she jumped from her sixth-floor flat, while holding him in her arms.

The mother, identified only as Rosa, died on the spot while her son died in hospital.

The incident happened in the city of Murcia, a city in south-eastern Spain.

According to local media, the little boy was initially alive when emergency services arrived on the scene.

They determined that the boy had sustained injuries and transported him to hospital, where he died.

A neighbour said they heard a terrible thud and when they went to inspect, saw Rosa and her young son lying in the street.

According to neighbours who knew Rosa, she separated from her husband three years ago and was living with her mother, who’s a retired teacher.

“She was a quiet woman, very normal. We saw her every day with her son, it seemed as though she loved him very much.”

A preliminary investigation said that there was no wrongdoing and it appeared that the mother had jumped due to depression.

The investigation is still ongoing.
